Source for Normandy Luxe Competition hub cones?
 

Hey Bike Fans,

Can anyone direct me to a source for cones for Normandy Luxe Competition hubs? My 1971 Peugeot PX-10 needs some new cones--at least in the rear hub.

I have the same problem, so I'll be watching this thread.

I'm sure you'd prefer another answer, but why not ditch the original axle and substitute something you can actually find new, like any of the axle sets that might have a similar cone profile and the correct axle length for your hub, here's just one possibility:

You'd want cromo axles, not that cheapie. They're all too long, but they can be shortened. You could also use their cones on your axle.

If you have the version with no dust caps, some cones may not fit through the holes. I bought a Miche set and had that problem.

How did they get the races in there?

I have two pairs of Normandy Luxe Competitions and need to replace a couple of bent axles. I guess they cast the aluminum hub shells around the steel bearing races -- it's a mystery!

The threads are 10mmX1mm rear and 9mmX1mm front, so Campy cones won't work. You should be able to choose some suitable Shimano replacement cones from the wheels site and have your LBS order them.

It's not really such a mystery. I looked closely at my set yesterday, and if you put them in good light, you can see that they actually do have a hairline joint in the outer face of the hub shell, about dustcap size. I haven't tried to pull them off (I use a cartridge bearing puller for Maillard and Campy pressed steel dustcaps, and it works great), and I'd be very careful not to use too much force and bend them; but I'm betting it can be done. It's really remarkable how invisible the fit is -- says something for French engineering/manufacture.

I've used other brands axles and cones in Normandy hubs off and on for years. I believe I used Shimano.

I needed a new cone for a Normandy Luxe Competition front hub with the red label. I found that Wheels Manufacturing #CN-R036 cone (for Shimano front hubs) was a very close fit. This is for a 1984 Trek 620.

UPDATE 10-2014: The Wheels cone was not a good fit after all. Every few rides, the hub went out of adjustment. Finally I disassembled it. It turns out the cone does not extend into the hub far enough. The bearings were running on the very edge of the cone, breaking off metal bits all over the grease.

I took a Normandy axle out of service a while ago due to a corrosion issue in one cone from sitting too long. Here is a photo of the cone that is hors de combat:

I assume the other cone etc. is still in good condition and I have it somewhere. Let me know if any of these parts are of immediate use to anyone. I'll be glad to send in exchange for a modest donation to BF.

I have 2 sets of Normandy Luxe Competition hubs. They were supposedly the best French hub of the late 60's-early 70's and the only widely available alternative to Campagnolo Record, but they don't represent any real competition to Campy. Afterwards everyone started making better hubs but if you have a high-end French bike of that vintage, well, that's what ya gotta have. I have a pretty low opinion of the original cones on mine and have since replaced them. The axles also suck and have a tendency to bend. I used Shimano Exage parts on one set and it was a big improvement. I don't remember what I used on the second set. Basically anything that fits. I don't know if this is a bad idea but it's worked great so far. I think the French axles have different threading so I did the complete axle/cone assemblies. I had a couple sets of Normandy Sport hubs and found them to be about the same quality, despite being lower in the hierarchy. Maybe one of those would do but I'd look for a mid-range Shimano cone/axle combo first.
