My Ugly Shogun
Just bought this tonight for $160 for a commuter/bar/long distance bike. I did a bit of searching about Shogun's and didn't really turn much up. I'd like to know a bit more about the model I bought if anyone has any info. I know it's a fixed gear and ugly as sin but the frame is still a beauty and i'm hoping you guys will know more about it then the fixed gear crowd.

I already plan to buy a brooks, new chainring (came bent), bars(and bar tape), wheelset, and a nice butted fork. If anyone has some suggestions on a good fork I am all ears. I plan to remove the disgusting blue on the cranks asap as well.

Well, the fork looks like it's probably not original. The aero tubes seem like an 80's thing and the downtube has a hole for the aero mount down tube shift levers. All in all it's pretty cool, I like the shape of bottom of the seat tube for wheel clearance.

not much info on shogun bikes. shogun was the brand of a small importer of japanese bikes during the 70s and 80s bike boom, with a distribution that covered mostly the northeast US. they ranged from low--end hi-ten frame 10-speeds to top-end tange 1-framed racing and touring bikes. the higher end models were beautifully made with quality frame materials and high quality lug brazing and excellent attention to detail, and were equipped with high end components.
not sure which company actually made their frames, or whether there were several different frame builders who supplied shogun their frames.
i have never seen your model, with the aero tubing. what does the sticker at the top of the seat tube say? that should indicate the frame material.

Shogun was imported by Seattle Bike Supply. Out of all the Japanese-made bikes from the 80s there seems to be the least information about Shogun, not even a catalog has been posted online. Was it a purely-Japanese production like Miyata that was imported by SBS, or a US-spec'd line made in Japan like Centurion? The name is apparently still used in Australia but I have no idea if that has any connection to the bikes sold in N America. Someone posted info from a Lotus owner's manual that directed owners to SBS for parts, which suggests a connection between those two makes, but who knows?

Long distance bike? I'd add a second brake and some gears.
Nice looking frame!
