Sadem Saddle?

I picked up a Sadem Saddle to put on one of my bikes. I got it at a local shop that had some older saddles hanging on the wall. They wanted $25.00 for it, so I figured I can make use of it. Does anyone here know anything about them?

Looks good. Maybe as good as a Brooks B-17. But at least as good as a Fujita Belt saddle. Nothing to sneeze at, in my opinion. Never heard of a Sadem saddle though. If you can find a Tariq Aziz seatpost, you might just have something there.

I saw that saddle in person a few times. It always looked pretty good to me and you can't really go wrong for the price.

I don't know why, but the title of this thread reminded me of this Ayatollah Khomeini bike seat from 15 years ago

In about 1980 purchased several Sadem saddles new from a distributor on the east coast of the U.S. iirc it may have been Joannou Bros.

Yes indeed, made in India.

You have to be a bit masochistic to ride one, I'd bet.

You were prudent to wait 'til W was out of office to buy that thing. You don't want the US Army launching a ground attack against your fixie.

I got a bunch of NOS Sadem saddles from a friend who gave me all of his parts from his closed bike shop and that's where he got them from. They are pretty nice saddles with thick leather, I kept a few around that had cosmetic issues for my own use. There are a few members that have a couple of these saddles around.

No, I know nothing about them. This piece looks nice. The leather looks a bit dry from the rear and perhaps the back should be saddle soaped, allowed to dry, then given a thin coat of Proofide. I would not do anything to the top - can't tell how that nice shiny finish was made. If it was just paint, you'll find out. If it was high-quality dye work like Brooks, I think you are really lucky!

A previous poster said that saddle-making in India contains some jewels and some duds. I'd want to figure out which this is.

If you have a caliper, measure the thickness of the leather. Brooks leather measurements exist in a few threads here on BF, but my rough recollection is that more than 5 mm is really good. Also see if you can visually determine if it is a piece of hide, or some kind of compressed leather sheet fabrication.

A little-used B-17 in that condition will feel hard and stiff if you press the leather in your hands. Another thing to check!
