Well two now... and I'm gonna do a lot of reps. for reals.

I'm more concerned with looking hardcore than actually proving it.

On a side note about posing...

A few bike lovin folks were gathered around a guy selling a small framed touring bike at the swap today and we were all joking around about how "Touring" Bikes are gonna be the next fad. We had a bunch of laughs riffing on how all the cool kids would be hanging at the coffee shop with a fully loaded tourer, not actually going anywhere further than the coffe shop or the used clothing store...just posing. "And its convenient because If I need anything, I've already Got it with me!" "Fixie? Yeah I was into that last year but..I'm all about Touring now"

This thread is a rare time when the sequel is actually better than the original. At the risk of getting moderated to oblivion I was wondering if I'm the only one that really didn't get into the whole Lord of the Rings fascination. I thought the movies sucked. Now Terminator 2 that was a good movie and arguably better than the first.

Road Fan 05-08-10 08:53 PM

Outside of the interesting but obscure idea raised by robatsu, that something about either Tolkien or Grant Peterson has some connection with what sounds like Jewish law, legend, or tradition, I see nothing in this thread worth keeping, and it's been a waste of time and bandwidth.

Shp4man 05-08-10 09:04 PM

Tolkien was a Catholic.

What, Road Fan...don't you like poetry? :(

It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.

-William Carlos Williams

See, Williams understood what Aaron, Flattop, and I were getting at! ;)

There once was a poet named Billy
whose poems were often quite silly
said he, 'Mine don't rhyme,
but I have a good time,
'cause I write them while playing with my
PARK TOOL CRANK PULLER

I have found this thread immensely eye opening... though curiously I read though it entirely even after realizing it had no real value... I don't know why.
Kinda like stopping and watching a bad car wreck.

Considering that Tolkien's work was, for a huge portion of a couple generations, the seminal work of fantasy literature, and that the only thing we had on film to show for it was a dumbed-down kid's version of "the Hobbit", and Bakshi's horrendous mutilation, Jackson's work was the answer to 30+ years of longing for something that did it justice. While some license was taken, he did a remarkable job of capturing what many, many had trapped in their imagination.

In a way, GP tried to restore some of what he felt was lost when profit and marketeering supplanted what was right and good about bicycles meant for average folk. He latched onto the powerful imagery of Tolkien's masterwork as part of his crusade. Yes, he is dogmatic and unyielding, and rubs plenty of folks the wrong way, but he has done a lot to disrupt the blind drive to put us all on aluminum and carbon. There's plenty I disagree with him on, but he's also done much to keep the bikes we love, a bit more relevant.

I thought the LOTR series was almost impossible to make a film out of, and what Jackson did was pretty dang impressive. I loved the books when I was younger, but I really doubt I'd have the patience for them as an adult...the first one especially dragssssssssss.

It's called "morbid curiousity" and is something whose existence has been acknowledged for millenia. I suppose the C&V equivalent of this is why we all stare at fixies, esp. those made from Paramounts and whatnot.

Which brings me back to wondering who spends more time admiring and less time riding - the typical fixie hipster or Chris Kulczycki of Velo Orange (who has yet to be identifiably photographed actually riding a bicycle).

Sorry guys, just kinda trying to keep on topic.

Also, I'm still waiting for Deano to top the Canadian Club joke which, as much as it pains me to confess, is the danged funniest joke I've heard in several years, definitely a keeper.

We're done here.

Please let this be a good example of why asking why a thread was removed with another thread is a bad idea. If you have a question regarding a thread, it's best to contact a mod or admin.
