1980's Peugeot Mixte- Questions about single speed conversion.

i got this semi-ancient peugeot for a song and i'd like to convert it to a single speed and add some new, and more effective brakes. i'm hoping that some of you more experienced riders/fixer-uppers might have some suggestions! thanks!

Honestly, I'd find a different bike to convert and here's why:

1. Those are 27" wheels. There's no reason you cant use 27's but I've always preferred 700's/
2. Those are steel wheels which is a by product of them being 27's....or maybe them being 27's is a by product of them being steel. Regardless, they're steel which means they're heavy and that also explains the poor braking. Shiney chrome = bad braking.
3. The crankset doesnt have 2 individual chainrings which means the entire crankset nbeeds ot be swapped out. A more conventional crankset with 2 removeable rings is very easy to convert. All you need to do a majority of the time is to remove the big ring and then move the inner ring to the outside.
4. Braking power. This doesnt have anything to do with converting....odds are the brake pads are dried out and hard as rock. Hard brake pads = no grip. If you had new brake pads it'd stop better. Add alloy wheels and it stop even better.

The right bike can be converted to SS for about $25. $17 for a BMX freewheel and $6 for BMX chainring bolts. Thats it...bada bing badda boom. $25 or ~75 Euros

Its not a mixte either. Its a bottom of the line step through frame bike.

Here's what a mid 1980s Peugeot mixte looks like (1985 P18T)

Not saying that converting this particular bike is a great idea....
But items 1, 2 and 4 are solved with a quick wheelset swap. Easy enough to get a flip flop wheel/wheelset for $90-100. Not tooooo bad.

Although, they might get lucky with chainline and just leave the big ring on, 3 could be a killer—as well as the general overall quality of the bike. Not something I'd want to sink money into.
