Rapid fire 8 w/ 7 speed freewheel. Y or N?

I want to convert a early MB-2 5 speed (130 spacing) to a seven speed shimano 14-28 freewheel using 8 speed XT rapidfire shifters by limiting derailleur travel with the limit screws. I also want to swap axles for Q/R at this time. I realize a re-dish and re-space will be necessary. Any reason this won't work?

I'm doing it right now on a mixte. 3x8 thumb/forefinger shifting with a 7-sp freewheel. My shifters aren't XT, though.

Thanks Robbie, I thought it would work.
