Interlacing spokes and thin gauge spokes?

Interlacing spokes and thin gauge spokes?
I've been working on a set of old balloon tire bicycle wheels and will be doing a rebuild with new spokes. These are thin 80 size spokes. I was wondering about interlacing the spokes on each side: the "over, over under" portion of the build where you interweave spokes on one side. Does that lend much strength? Is it possible or advisable with thin gauge spokes?
The original wheels I've seen do not interlace and I was wondering how much strength I'd be losing by not doing it. The pattern will be 36 per wheel, cross 3.
