@The Golden Boy - I have seen the Soma racks in person and don't care for their finish. It's like some sort of painted on finish. I want raw aluminum or stainless. I don't care about the name, but care about design and finish.

That's really good to know. They look just "aluminum-y," but if they have a cheap looking finish- it makes sense to keep looking.

The Soma front rack is back ordered from several companies including Soma's own website. Waiting on a response, anyone know when they maybe available or another retailer? For that matter anyone selling a front rack that would work on my Univega Gran Rally?

I've never been big on front racks.
The drive train and bottom bracket, they kind of hold my interest, though. |
Another Nitto. :)
Since this pic I've added a VO decaleur, a Shimano dyno hub and another Dyad rim. I also just received an Edelux II light from a family member in Germany. Great rig. Next long planned ride is a lap around Lake Superior next summer. Nice Gomango. What size tires you running?? They look very supple.

Challenge Strada Biancas 700x30. Gravel, nice roads, MUPs, everywhere. They made it to Thunder Bay from the Twin Cities and back without a flat. Roll like a big, puffy Veloflex Master. |

Nice. I love the color.

Here's that Soma rack everyone's talking about. I usually keep a Blackburn rack on the back, too, and they definitely don't match but it doesn't bother me too much. |

Ta rack with bilenky added light mount.

I saw this bike in the flesh (in the metal?) before @whatwolf left Brooklyn. It is really something, and I agree with what you say. My wife bought her All-City Macho Man bike. Impeccable is right. I just can't pec it. ;)

whatwolf, I hope you post pictures of your work.
How's your new life out there? San Diego is beautiful. |
I have something of a rack addiction:
Nitto/Grand Bois M13 on my Rawland. A bolt up rack that just fit right without any adjustment: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2884/...91a17501_b.jpg Keeps the center of gravity nice and low: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5558/...d3f1e68b_b.jpg Here's a VO Porteur rack on my Shogun. I ditched the flimsy fork crown bracket which allows a degree of wobble in the rack, and had a welder weld a mount out of similar diameter SS tubing: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3673/...bf9d8e4f_b.jpg While at it, he welded on a headlight mount using the same tubing. At the end of the mount, he tapped it for an M6 bolt. The headlight just bolts on to it: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5468/...9df240a6_b.jpg Here's the whole view: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3875/...501bee6e_b.jpg And a stock bolt-up TA rack on my Jack Taylor: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3725/...41fd498c_b.jpg It handles a small bag with a couple of pounds of stuff very well, although I think the angle is a little too tilted for my taste: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2922/...edf54a3b_b.jpg |
Oh, and here's a Dia Compe Ene front rack designed to bolt to Dia Compe / Weinmann centerpulls. I used it for one century ride on my Mercian but decided the rack was very poorly designed so I no longer use it:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7241/...bc8ecc2f_b.jpg The main issue is that the fork crown bracket is weak and the bolt hole is highly polished, making it difficult to prevent the brake assembly from rotating when you bump the rack or bag. |
I broke one of those Dia Compe mini-racks and another that was like the TA by strapping a WALD basket to them. Just the weight of the basket itself was enough to brake off the mounts to the fork crown (in the case of the ENE) or to the calipers (in the case of the TA-like rack). Live and learn.
