using braze on downtube shifters on a frame without mounts

hi guys! i'm in the process of upgrading my girlfriend's bike to indexed shifting. she has a 6 speed freewheel so my only shifter options seem to be downtube shifters. the bike currently has stem shifters and no studs on the frame to mount braze-on shifters. so i'm wondering if anyone makes an adapter that clamps on to the downtube but allows for the installation of braze-on shifters. does something like this exist? thanks!

Sure. Clamp-on shifters will work, or you can get a generic clamp from most Japanese shifter sets (Suntour, preferably) and mount your existing levers to them. Exceptions exist for French hardware.

Make it even easier on yourself and find a complete set of band-on shifters with their corresponding levers. It'll save a lot of frustration if you have something that just won't fit conventional mounts (or you can't find a conventional band). Complete sets are cheap enough - raid your local co-op, eBay, or find a small bike shop with ample parts bins.
