Sachs/Maillard freewheel : 7spd to 1spd ???

Hello.

I have a Mavic GP4/Mavic 501 wheel fitted with a Sachs/Maillard 7-speed freewheel.
I was wondering if there was any way I could disassemble the freewheel, feed it with spacers and only keep my 15t ring so that I could avoid buying another freewheel ? This is to lose the weight of all the unused rings and also for appearance. It's the last step of my single-speed conversion.

The main problem is also that 15t freewheels are only made by AC (AC888) and seem both unavailable and pricey.

Thanks for any info.

PS this image made me think it was indeed possible
although I have to say my freewheel does not have the 3 notches at the back... so maybe the rings really aren't removeable.

A good BMX freewheel is like $15. By the time you find all the spacers you are going to be up there in money and you won't save much or any weight. Just spend the $15. Roger

ACS freewheels cost <$20 even from my LBS. BMX freewheels may have smaller 30mm threading, so make sure you get the road size.

I doubt your FW has the two notches to remove it aswell. as the other said you are better off buying a BNX FW and be done with it. if you must have a 15t you'll have to pay the price or go to a different tooth count.

Sorry if I'm mistaken, but ACS doesn't make a 15t freewheel that will fit on std. road hub threads (only on BMX weird size).... right ?
And it's not exactly plug and play : I'd have to re-space and re-dish (I've done it already on another SS)

I feel like I really need 15t (and not 16) here and I don't want to replace my Zeus 45t drillium on the front (LOL!)

I guess I'll try to disassemble next time I'm at the coop.... I was just wondering if it's possible to do... AKA... is it a block that can be shuffled or is it all stuck together ?

The problem is 15t freewheels that fit road hubs are one of a kind, only made by AC racing (not ACS), and seem to be discontinued.
Two sellers on eBay sell them at somewhat reasonable prices, but they will only ship in the USA, not in Canady... it also has many negative reviews around the net...

Use a larger ring so that you can use a cheap and readily available cog. Larger gears are more efficient.

You are going to have to respace and redish your wheel.

I think it may not be possible to respace a Mavic 501.

They don't.

I count 16 teeth on that freewheel.

I think it is a stock pic. the page for the 14t shows a 16t FW too

I was just looking over on VeloBase. I think you may need a different axle to do this or at the very least some spefic Mavic parts.

Amazon.com shows the ACS freewheel available in 15t:

https://www.amazon.com/ACS-32-Inch-Cl.../dp/B000AXXA7M

The Dicta BMX freewheel also comes in 15t:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=263602_263622

I've used them both, and ACS tends to be a bit higher quality.

I have been wondering the same thing myself. Seems to me that it could be done.

It looks like my Sachs/Maillard freewheel doesn't use the « customizable » system Maillard had invented... at least now I feel like I couldn't be bothered if there was a way.

I'll end up using a basic DICTA 16t for this, since I can't find any supplier of 15t AC888 that will ship to Canada.
I guess it's spinning time for me (my trainer bike is a 52/16 set up)

For the record, the less-than-16t single freewheels aren't available for standard road hubs... only AC makes one that's compatible, but it's hard to find and has quite a few bad reviews on the net.

I took the freewheel off (to replace a spoke) my wheel today but forgot to check if respacing was going to be possible.
