You have inspired me, no doubt.

Very nicely finished.

We even have the cat, Orbit's his name.

Very nice shop space, but I'm also in awe of the number of parts and spare stuff collected over the years.

So, you named the two metal toolboxes...what's in the Gerstner?

nlerner 09-26-10 12:12 PM

Terrific job on the workspace. You inspire me to get my cluttered bike basement organized (though that won't happen until the winter!).

Very nice, I wish my 12x24 shop ( which is like yours in build ) was that organized also. I have been reorganizing it for the last few months after I picked up a very large glass bead/sandblast cabinet. Mine also serves triple duty as a bicycle shop a motorcycle shop and a power equipment repair shop so trying to find a place for everything ( and remembering where it is ) can be frustrating to say the least. I really like your parts bins looks nice and easy to find stuff and professional looking to boot( I use parts boxes made from cardboard ) Is your shop going to be heated and if so what type of heater are you going to use.
Glenn

A bead blasting cabinet and parts washer tank are the two things I wish I had room for - the only way those will go in is to remove the motorcycle stand. Which is getting tempting. The only motorcycles I still work on are my '69 Triumph Bonneville and '69 Honda Super 90 - the two modern bike go to the dealer. It's easier, and more competent. At present, I've got the shop at work for the times I've got to use them, but it's still too damned inconvenient.

Heat will be the usual tower style kerosene heater that I used in the garage the past five winters. Regarding ventilation: When I ordered the building, I had the two standard windows cancelled out, because I knew I was going to need wall space for shelving. In the end, I should have kept one of the windows, if only to put a small air-conditioner in for the summer.

bikerosity57 09-26-10 01:20 PM

I don't like it.

bikerosity57 09-26-10 01:23 PM

"cause it ain't in my yard!

bikerosity57 09-26-10 01:24 PM

It's a great idea well executed. Who wouldn't want this in the back yard?!

old_dreams 09-26-10 02:10 PM

Great setup...thanks for posting. Inspirational indeed.

BluesDaddy 09-26-10 02:17 PM

Verrry nice!! I have a similar space, now I need to step up with the organization. Glad to see it CAN be done.

RobbieTunes 09-26-10 05:13 PM

Just when you get that place lined up with bikes, they'll call you back to work.

WNG 09-26-10 05:17 PM

Great space! So organized and cleverly so too! I like the inverted closet maid hanger shelving idea. Funny, I have a white proctor silex toaster oven in my garage too....what does that say about us?!? LOL!
Even with a (modest) 3-car garage, I'm space challenged. I hope to have a similar workshop set up to one corner...grinder, pedestal drill press, BF-vise, and a proper workbench. I learned to use a bench and engine lathe back in HS. Had the chance to use them again almost 20 years later at a former employer. It's a blast! You would've loved having a lathe in your workshop, and no doubt get the hang of it quickly. That mini engine is so cool! I bet you can fab the intake and exhaust pretty easily, or frankenstein parts from a weed whacker. It would make your late father-n-law proud to have it roar to life!! :)

The kittens are neat, to have mascots in the bike cave makes it even sweeter.
I don't see any speakers! Must have music. ;)
I like the suspended bike work stand idea, I'm doing a DIY version now.

miamijim 09-26-10 05:23 PM

I've been avoiding clicking on this thread and wish I hadn't.....my workshop is going to disappear within a few weeks and to be honest I've lost all interest in wrenching because of it.

Congrats on the new workshop, I hope you enjoy it.

gtownviking 09-26-10 05:29 PM

two words...AWE SOME!!!!

mkeller234 09-26-10 05:30 PM

Wow, that is amazing

jacksbike 09-26-10 05:35 PM

Awesome and very well done. I, like others it seems, am relegated to a small section of my unheated garage. I intend to use a kerosene heater also, this winter. 1 of my 4 cats, Sheeba, comes and visits me regularly, almost hourly, to check on me. She has been the only cat, in 25 years of owning cats, that behaves this way. I am also inspired by your organization. Recently purchased stackable plastic cabinets and shoeboxes in order to sort my parts much better than it has been. There's always time when there is winter in New England.

I am jealous. I need one of those so the girl stops nagging me for working on bikes in the living room.

I'm 60, and there's still four motorcycles in the garage (two modern license, two vintage). I fully intend to have multiple bicycles, multiple motorcycles and one sports car in the garage for my heirs to worry about.

We've got six cats on the property, two who've lived inside with us (Linus and Dixie) for the past three years, plus the four outdoor who showed up in July. Prior to the current two, I had seventeen years with Killian, who I will always call God's Own Cat. Cat personality, dog loyalty, and an amazing intelligence to know his place in the house and his determination to pull his own weight. When my workshop was the garage, he spent every evening in there with me, and was an absolute master at stopping the inevitable runaway nut, bolt, whatever whenever I got fumble fingered.

Back in the days when I was doing historical costuming out of the basement of my house, Killian would spend the entire work day sitting on the sewing machine table while I worked.

Of Manson's family, Squeak follows me around like a puppy and is the one cat I have to double check to make sure I don't lock him in the shop overnight. The other three will sit at the doorway, but if they're in there when I come in . . . . ZOOM!

The toaster over is for baking small parts that I've painted. Or will be - that came from a pile that my mother-in-law was going to donate to Goodwill.

There's a boom box in there, but it's never used. Despite having been an absolute crazed glam rocker in the 70's, then punk, then New Wave, finally ending at Metal, I don't listen to music anymore. I prefer to live in silence. We did both ends of the 16 hour drive to Maine and back with nothing more than the occasional comment from the GPS in my phone.

Of course, I married a chatterbox . . . . . . . .

I got called back at the end of April. Since Patti had her stroke, the company suggested that I could internet commute into the company database. I show up at the office 2-3 mornings a week for about four hours to swap paperwork and take care of what can't be done at the house.

I love my employer. :love::love::love:

noglider 09-26-10 09:13 PM

Sorry to hear that, Jim. What's a happenin?

They're still feral, and the little black one, named Squeak, is the only really people friendly one of the bunch (he's spends his evenings sitting or laying next to me when I work), However, we all get along well, and there hasn't been any mouse problems in the garage or sheds since they arrived.

Awwww... nice of you to acknowledge the true owners.

I'm still in my garage, at least "my" half is devoted to bicycle stuff. I had a couple days off, so I managed to clean off a couple years' worth of detritus:

I also organized the parts collection a bit:
