Steel and a country ride
Hello all,
I've had this certain desire to pick up an older steel bike fully campy and go for a ride on a lovely warm evening in the countryside. I've lusted over Colnago's for some time and a De Rosa here and there. I've recently come accross a deal that I'm thinking about and was looking for others with the same love affair with steel. Does anyone have any comments on a 1984 Trek 770 with Super Record? fresh paint for $425?
I know this certainly is not a Colnago but with reynolds 531 and full campy at a fraction of the price of a comparable Colnago this just might serve to ease my fix. Back to Colnago. Any frames to look out for or to be wary of in anyone's experiance? The Mexico models seem to go for less, were they made in Mexico or was that just a name? Any and all comments are welcome I ride a 58cm to 56cm depending on this or that. LOL

As the owner of a Colnago Master (albeit with Record Ergo 8) and a Basso with S. Record I understand your fantasies.
Fact of the matter is that Trek is as well made as most if not any Italian ride, it just doesn't have the panache. $425 for a 700 series Trek with S Record is a good deal in my book. I'm sure some have found comparable bikes for less but that bike on eBay would probably bring a good bit more. I'd say go for it.
In regards to 'Nagos, I'm partial to the Master line but collectors often drool over Supers. Hard to go wrong.

I'd slap down the cash if you're inclined to a great old steel ride. The Trek frames from that period are very very nice. I just hauled out an 84 560 for a ride up to Ashland this past weekend; wonderful ride. Just brilliant. Admittedly a lesser bike than the 700 series (but then I got it for 35$ at a thrift store-- a complete and utter steal).

I just haven't finished building it up yet (needs repaint). Got the frame for $25.
spent a bit more on the super record parts.
I also have an 85 Trek 670, wonderful rider. I can't wait to get the 770 on the
road (just have to figure out who to send it to for repaint!).
I also lust after Colnagos, de Rosas, Pogliaghis and Tommasinis, still want one
of the above but the Trek is an awfully nice bike. Personally I think they rival
the italian steel of the era.
The Mexico was built in Italy, just like all the other colnago's. They were built
in honor of Merckx's hour attempt at the mexico city velodrome. I believe
they were straight guage tubing (columbus SL?) as opposed to the Super
which was a butted tubeset. If I were looking for a colnago (and I always do)
I'd want a mid to late 70's model, a late 60's pogliaghi is right up there on
my list along with a few unknowns (like Zieleman).
