Wondering about Weight???

Two Peugeot "Course" bicycles, nearly identical, but made from different tube sets. One, the bigger of the two, a 56cm ride and made from Carbolite 103, weighs 21lb 7oz.

The other, a Reynolds 531 53cm bicycle, comes in at 22lb 13oz.

The results surprised me, and does tend to support something, I have believed for quite a while. Carbolite 103 offers a pretty decent ride quality.

It does have a pretty good ride. My second Peugeot ever was a P-8. It rode great. 501 is fairly heavy tubing(made for heavier riders?), but I would still be lead to believe it was lighter than 103. You did mean to type 501 instead of 531?.,,,,BD

At any rate 22# is pretty light for something for a tube set that people might turn their nose up at, I'd ride a slightly heavier tubing over 531, them tubes are flexy, good for just cruising but horrible for any other kind of riding, im not even a heavy rider either.

When you say "nearly identical", please elaborate. Do they have the exact same wheel set?
Also, I do not think that 501 & 531 are the same.

I have a P8 (Carbolite 103) and a PX-10 (Reynolds 531). Just to be clear: these two ride completely differently. BUT, I really LOVE to ride my P8! The quality of the ride is waaaay better than what I had been led to believe it would be. I use it for short ten - fifteen mile rides around town, or strap in into the back of the van when I travel, for more casual riding when I'm out of town. It's solid as a rock and - with the fresh powder coat this past summer - looks pretty sweet too.

Yes, you can get a Carbolite framed bike that light with the right components. I was able to get my PH10s to a similar weight in the 80's using similar components and enjoyed the bike immensely because of the now well known fantastic rides these "base level" frames from Peugeot provided.

I think that you need to check your scale.

Missed the weight comment earlier. I agree - check your scale. My PX-10 comes in at slightly under 21 pounds, my P8 - and this is with modern, lighter components by the way - still comes in around 28 pounds. It rides great, as I said before, but it is also - easily! - the heaviest of my vintage bikes.
