What Campy BB cups do I need?

I'm looking to replace the pitted Campy BB cups on my 74 Motobecane Grand Record. They are french threaded. The spindle is a 68 SS 120 X3 (I'm running a Triple Campy crank).

Do I need a thick wall cup or a thin wall cup? If I am looking at replacements on ebay, how do I tell the difference between the two?

Thanks,

Mark

For a Record triple spindle, you need the thin cups. (Nuovo Records, made only for doubles, used thick cups.) The thick cups have helical grooves milled into the spindle hole (resembling the lands in a rifle barrel), to thrust dirty water out of the bearings. They should be easily visible in photos taken with any degree of obliqueness. In a head-on shot that prevents you from seeing any of the thickness, the grooves make the hole look mis-shapen and not properly round, as if it had been drilled off kilter.

Good luck in finding the thin cups.

Bicycle Classics seems to have them. Record (not Nuovo) and Gran Sport also used thin cups as well as all triples:

NOS 'Thin' Campagnolo Record/GS Cupsets w/lockring

  • NOS thin-wall British-thread cupset (1.370" x 24 tpi), $49.00, BBCS-CTB
  • NOS thin-wall Italian-thread cupset (36 mm x 24 tpi), $49.00, BBCS-CTI
  • NOS thin-wall French-thread cupset (35 mm x 1 mm), $49.00, BBCS-CTF

This link has the best info I have found for Campy BBs (I found the link in another thread here while searching, so thanks whoever dug this up)

I went out and looked and my adjustable cup is a thin wall and my fixed cup is a thick wall. That explains why there was a 2 mm spacer on the adjustable cup.
