If yellow on the bars, then traditional grey/silver cable housing. The yellow is critical, I have had to search hard for a true hue yellow, not marigold yellow.

An Oro drilled chain is a handsome choice, but finished? No waterbottle? No pump?

Black bikes are almost always handsome. Steel in a tuxedo. Chanel knew the power of black too.

Stunning!!!

Absolutely beautiful!

So, you gonna hang it on the wall or ride it like you stole it?

I have been looking for an appropriate frame pump at an appropriate price but haven't found one yet. Will use my minipump until then. And yes I do need a bottle cage or two.

1984,60cm. Built in California by Rob Roberson according to Joe Starck's build sheets, fork built by Joe Starck.

Thanks for the info. The fork blades look a little fatter, more Columbus-like, than the fork on my '80 Roberson. The paint is amazing for original. Congratulations.

Well I honestly can't say for sure that it is 531. It was my understanding that all the 84s were Reynolds 531 but I don't know that for sure and there are no tubing decals. I will ask Joe. He is on the CR list all the time.

This is a stunner, great job on the finishing touches.

Joe says could be 531 or Columbus SLX. They used both in 1984. I will check next time I have the BB out. Can't tell looking down the seatpost. Looks like rifling at BB but can't really tell.

Very nice! I love it. ;)

BlueDevil63 11-18-10 05:37 PM

Finally looked in the seat tube. Reynolds 531. I suppose the fork could be Columbus but there is no dove stamped on it.

poprad 11-18-10 06:25 PM

Wow. I mean really, wow. Do you have a Flickr or some other photo account where you posted a full series of this build? Magnificent job, really. Let me know when you want to sell it (or the others) as I am also a 60.

That stem is killer. A shot of that with fall leaves reflected in it would be awesome.

due ruote 11-18-10 07:03 PM

I think I'm afraid of this bike. I mean that in the best possible way.

I am working on a "professional" photo shoot on this bike right now. White backdrop, pro lighting, etc. Should have it done in a week or two and will post the pictures ASAP.

This is still my favorite vintage bike. I am kind of a Masiphile and although I also have a 72 (Italian) Masi GC, this one still grabs me the most. When I saw this frame I knew I had to have it. I have never seen another black Masi GC (although I know others must exist).

ftwelder 11-19-10 05:03 AM

amazing. Very nice bike.

shorthanded 11-19-10 06:09 AM

oh ouch.. stolen directly from my dreams as a 14 year old.. in 1985...

man, stuff really doesn't have NEARLY the minimalist power of bikes from that era anymore!

There are other Black Masis, but not too many. I have seen one from 1970 even. It was a non standard color but another was built in late 1974 at Carlsbad. Then just a few until it became a listed color in 1977-78, my memory is a bit hazy on that exact "public" intro.

I do agree, a Black bike is hard to beat.

I finally finished a complete photo set on this bike that I really like. Here are some examples. See the rest at my website: http://www.cicloclassico.com/84Masi.php.

That's a jaw dropper.
And that's a really shallow seattube... very unlike other 80's Italian style frames.
Is there a reason you don't have quill pedals and Binda Extras?

rootboy 12-21-10 05:49 PM

Oh.....you're killing me here. 'nuf said. BD, I have a yellow Silca that might fit if you're interested. PM me. Not pristine and, black would be nicer in my opinion but...I'd gladly donate it to that stunner if you can use it.

Ack. I was going to put in a disclaimer about that :) In fact I meant to put on correct pedals and clips for the shoot and forgot. This is a rider and I do like my step in pedals so this ended up with a set. Blasphemy I know.

Oh and the seat is generally up higher than I usually have it because I pulled the seat to try and figure out if this bike was Columbus SLX or Reynolds 531 since both were used in the early 80s. Turned out to be Reynolds and the weather turned really sour before I got to ride it again and get the seat adjusted.

Un Befrikkin believable! This is all wrong, so wrong, to post these photos and incite lust, envy, covetedness, all the deadly sins. Have mercy- at least say you will sell.

robertofergy 12-21-10 08:19 PM

Dont change a thing! This bike is perfection!

Well I started in this with the idea of having a "hobby business" in retirement. Don't really need to make money, just can't lose too much. I like to work on bikes maybe more than riding them. But I am having a real hard time selling them. First off I made the mistake of buying stuff that fits me. And I really enjoy riding the old steel. But certainly by next spring I need to start selling stuff because I am running out of room and I have a few that I am not totally in love with or aren't in the kind of original condition I would like to have. I doubt I will be able to sell the Masis (what is plural for Masi?) though. I am actually trying to build a Masi collection. Looking for an early California Masi, an Italian built early Masi 3V, and maybe even a 60s Masi Special. Probably everything else will be on the block though.

surgeonstone 12-23-10 04:40 AM

Cool, really cool bike. Great Job.
