Heels strike panniers?

Well I was very excited when I picked up a pair of panniers today during my lunch hour till I got home. I installed them on the rear rack and thought, "that looks pretty good"..... Then I took it for a ride and that all changed. My heels hit the corners of the panniers and it drives me nuts. Is this how most of them are or is it just that these don't fit correctly? I might just return them and get a rack trunk.

You need to get the rack farther back, or get a rack that goes farther back. I've been eyeing tubus logo for a hybrid -> touring conversion I'm doing.

Me + Miyata 001..jpgCan they be repositioned a little further back on the rack? I moved mine, REI bags on a Blackburn rack, back as far as possible. Don't know but it could be my Miyata 210 has a little longer stays than your Shogun.

i cant say enough good things about the axiom streamliner rack. it basically works perfectly on every bike, even those without rack mounts.

Yup, my big feet and long crank arms combined to give me some contact. I was able to move my panniers back behind a weld on my Cannondale rack. It's still mighty close, but no more interference.

I have borderline heel strike issues with my bikes & panniers. I've been able to finesse them adequately by:
  • placing the panniers further back on the rack
  • positioning the rack higher up and/or further back, within its mounting constraints
The ultimate solution is a touring frame, with longer chainstays. That way the weight is better distributed, instead of overhanging the rear axle so much. The mounting lugs are nice to have also.

Your frame looks to have fairly short chainstays. Most frames designed for panniers have chainstays of at least 43cm. Can you move the panniers further back on the rack?

You may also want to investigate other panniers with truncated corners to increase heel clearance.

Interesting. Does it feel sturdy? Folks on Amazon (the source for genius commentary, of course) have complained of it collapsing on their rear wheels.

You might try moving the rack down the seat stays a bit. This will tilt the bags back as well as move rearward.

I used a Jandd Expedition rack on my Trek 750 Multitrack to accommodate my size 12/13 feet. I works good with my panniers, although this pic shows it with my trunk rack.

If moving the rack back does not work, you might also consider the Tubus quick release adapter (a little pricey, but prob cheaper than a new rack):

https://www.thetouringstore.com/TUBUS...ONS%20PAGE.htm

Quick Release Rack Mounting Kit
The photos above are of a quick release mounting system that works with most of the Tubus racks. This adapter allows you to mount a rack on a bike without lower rack mounting eyelets, such as a race bike. In addition, it moves the rack toward the rear of the bike, greatly increasing heel clearance for panniers -- great for bikes with short chainstay lengths. The adapter consists of a longer quick release mechanism, and the curved stainless steel brackets that slip over the quick release skewer and attach to rack. $33.00 Set

I see vertical stiffness and strength issues with that design that are not present with conventional designs that tie all the vertical struts directly to the dropout. YMMV

Hey Auchen, I only wear red heels.....

I solved the problem, I returned the panniers and got a rack bag.
