I'm partial to C-Record - any generation.

Rad, didn't you buy one of the 7s groupsets off ebay a few years back - was it called a Mavic American (? I'm fuzzy on this).
If so, did you ever put it to use, and what do you think of it?

It was a Regina America mini-group. Really nice looking stuff. I had plans for it but all that went out the door last year when I lost my job. I sold it earlier this year.

My vote is for the Campagnolo Record C and Croce D'aune group. The first generation Campagnolo Record C or Corsa has the engraved(stamped?) logo on the aero seatpost, shift levers, rear derailleur and that gorgeous sparkling Record C crankset. Now for the best looking brakes "Campagnolo Delta", they are not the most proficient stopping, but they look great on impact!

I was also thinking first gen Dura Ace such as those components on Scott Ryder's Fuji Ace. Sweet!

Did someone mention Delta brakes?

I saw your Delta brake on Ebay going for $355 plus! I did list my Delta set, but decided they would look great on my Gios. After I pulled the Delta listing I received several offers(from Ebay watchers), and said no!

The Campagnolo 8sp brifters are 1st generation Record C.

Deltas sold for $431. The C-Record rear der sold for $356. Hated to see them go as they were in such nice shape but the kids gotta eat and the holidays are here. Beauty Gios I might add...one bike on the very small list of bike I still want to someday own.

I'm a sucker for drillium and Zeus did it particularly well:

i have a set of these in the basement. they are pretty but mine are a bit scratched up.

edit: thought i quoted the comment about mistral cranks. anyways

mickey85 11-27-10 07:27 PM

I hate to say it, but I just do NOT like Delta brakes - really big and clunky, IMO... Pretty finish, and I like that everything is hidden, it just seems that the package could be...more petite?

C-Record!

sailorbenjamin 11-27-10 08:54 PM

So far Schwinn Approved is the only set mentioned here that comes with a spoke protector. A nice shiny chrome spoke protector.

nlerner 11-27-10 09:08 PM

I have an awesome Huret spoke protector on my '74 Raleigh Super Tourer with Huret Jubilee mechs and Huret stem shifters:

I like them all. I, therefore have too many bikes.

A couple which have been missed:

-First generation Campy Chorus
-Ofmega Mistrel/Master (mid 80's)
-Mavic 631

Obeast 11-27-10 10:05 PM

Most beautiful RD I've ever seen. The only one close to it is the Sram Red RD.

I'm building an art deco bike using mixed parts, from a variety of mfgs. across the decades, and I think the delta brakes come quite close to what an art deco (streamlining era of late 30s) brake set ought to look. I don't think the folks here care whether they work well or not.

I keep the group thinking I'll find a pretty Japanese frame to hang it on some day. I also have a nuovo record rd that I keep just because it is so beautiful and because it represents an era of beautiful lugged road bikes to me.

The 600 tricolor group however (8s STI) is easy on the eyes and performs very well... Not all that vintage but I think 8s stuff sort of bridges the gap.

My Raleigh thats not really a Raleigh has 600 Arabesque RD on it and it shifts incredible. I am blown away at just how that thing drops into gears like it is indexed. It has a Suntour Super Bee free hub and Suntour Power shifts on the down tube that are soon to be replaces with Suntour bar ends. There is some Campy Record parts that just hit CL that would look good on the bike (it has High flange records, Drillium record post and campy drops on the frame) but it shifts so good I hate to mess with it.
I also have a set of Cyclone Derailers that I have not decided what to put them on. I liberated them from a Univega I was Flipping. Had a guy buy a Tange Prestige frame from me this week and we got talking parts. I dropped the cyclone RD in his palm and he was blown away with the quality and how light it was. He had never handled one before. For comparison I dropped a very low mile 105SC RD in his hand. The Cyclone seems to weigh half as much.

'Course I'd want the PY10CP frame to go with it: 531sl with brazed-on brake pivots. Some nice pics of one here: http://www.jimlangley.net/ride/py10.html , :

First off, thanks BC for posting this cool weblink, I've never seen his site before.

Second, I'll add my voice to the Ofmega is cool opinions. I used the Mistral crank on my Centurionelli project and paired it with a neat Ofmega Premier (which works wonderfully) rear D. that fits the theme. I just need to find a front from the same design and it's sort of a "gruppo", paired with Campy brakes that have similar visual accents. Maybe a slightly sacriligeous +mix and match" but I thought it worked well visually.
