So, what would one do with it besides just own it? the pressure bottles expire, then?

When one sees such a slick brochure with a system... it reads non product to me.

It's cool to see pictures of all the extra bits. Such a strange system. Most people don't know how a bicycle works... doing this just seems insane.

This was actually a pre saint DH parts group from shimano. Was stupidly expensive and when it worked, it worked great. Big drawback was when you got a puncture in the air hose, you lost all shifting capabilities. Not many wound up being made and not many left that aren't damaged in some kind of way, which is why it's pretty much becoming a highly desirable group to get your hands on, just like 8 speed XTR/XT.

im not much for shimano but i always have liked this group for novelty. it would be cool on a titanium hardtail with 29in wheels, a rigid fork, and hydraulic disc brakes. its good i dont have too much money...

Starting to, depends on the condition. XTR more so than XT, especially if it's the short cage xtr.

what happens when you run out of air out in the mountains where you'd ostensibly be using this?

Exactly.
Trail head if doing shuttle runs or at the end of the course if at a bikepark.

So if this system worked perfect, what is the advantage? I imagine it weighed more, cost more and caused more problems than it ever solved. What did the marketing sell as the advantage?

Will have to hold on to my XTR 8 speed brifters and brakes methinks... they are pretty fab.

At certain points in time there wasn't much Shimano was afraid to try. They would send the place I worked lots of parts and we were encouraged to modify or reconfigure at will.

Hook the system up to a bad preacher or a politician. They are full of extra hot air!

yeh, haha look at all the problems the early '80s aero dura ace groups caused for everyone else despite being a flop!

I actually never even heard of this, the thought of something like this just seems so absurd its laughable! It would be interesting if you didn't have to carry around a big co2 tank on your bike. Maybe they should of made the shifters suck in air any time the supply was getting too low like a work site air compressor.

Wonder if you could modify it to work with C02?

...and increase your carbon footprint!?! Eh-gad! How environmentally unfriendly!

Nitrogen is the way to go my friend. Extract it from the atmosphere. Bigger molecules so it won't leak out as fast. We should all use it in our inner tubes.

Or, try butane, for the after burner effect.

I'm pretty sure you can recharge the bottles. I seem to remember that they were good for a few hundred shifts - enough for any ride, and if you lose you shifting on a DH run it's not going to leave you stranded, ya just got to point the bike downhill.

pastorbob: If you used CO2, it would be pulled from the atmosphere as well. No increase in carbon footprint.

Ok... but what is the advantage of air powered shifts? Is there any old marketing material out there, I want to see what points they promoted it on.

I have a feeling it was the "oh, look... a techie gadget"

Haha, thanks Chuckk. That answers the question about being stranded, you can fill it with a pump.

My favorite part:
"always fast, smooth, and responsive regardless of your energy level or attitude."

I want to know who's attitude is bad enough that they don't want to move an shift indexed lever!

Shimano always get racked over the coals by Luddites. Back in the 70's you guys would have hated Dura Ace too.

Off to ride my Dyna-Drive....
