I bought my Colnago from a friend/riding buddy who lives in a neighboring town. He was selling it for his brother; a retired Cat 2 racer from down in the San Fernando valley. It was his race bike, and looks it. Oddly, the frameset was originally sold to him at a shop that I occasionally buy mtb stuff from.

I received my Fuji in a trade with a guy who lives in Ventura. He has a pretty nice collection.

I bought my Schwinn from a nice Hispanic guy on CL

Jeesus! Everyone's bikes are so much more awesome than mine. Still, here's a boring story.

My '80 Motobecane Mirage was sold to me by the first owner. I love this bike, and ride it the most of all three of the bikes I own.
My '81 Schwinn World Sport was sold to me as a frame and fork and I ride it almost as much as the Motobecane. It is a fixed gear conversion, though (someone decided to remove ALL braze-ons)
My '84 Schwinn Le Tour was sold to me by the kid who'd paid to have the frame and fork and drop bars powdercoated black. I'm glad he left the frame alone and didn't file off anything, because I have a feeling that I'm not going to want to ride this frame fixed forever.

I get 99% of my bikes and bike items from old french men who have been convinced (by shops, magazines etc) that old bikes are rubbish, un-usable and are only worth 20 euros.

I was buying a 70's olmo a while back with a mix of campagnolo and zeus from a flee market. My french gf was pretending to be english to force me to do the negotiations to help my french. I offered 20 euros, and they happily accepted and he explained to me about his bike, what campagnolo is and tubulars etc.

As we left with the bike she laughed and said to her husband in french 'only an english fool would buy a rubbish bike like that' :lol:

Most frames are from CL, or donated by friends. I got a surly from a web-retailer (can't recall which one, for certain). One frameset i got in lieu of my wage for a 4 hour shift at a bike shop.

The components/goodies? A lot from japan, taiwan, usa, germany, tires from various far-eastern locales, england, one saddle from italy. The sources? Far too complicated to mention here, but i've developed a nasty ebay derailer habit, where i get a derailer for a few bucks, plus $10 shipping. it's a sickness. And, i have more rear derailers than i have frames, despite some bikes being SS or igh.

As far as provenance, 3 are from CL (Sekai, GF, Litespeed), 1 from a garage sale (Schwinn), and 1 given by a friend who said he found it abandoned (Herc).

So thanks to the Eddy Merckx thread, I now realize ... THEY'RE ALL STOLEN! :eek:

As for where I obtained my bikes, by far, most C&V types come from yard sales. Craigslist is second ( yes there are still bargains on CL). Third place goes to private sales then estate sales then trading with BF members. I've obtained exactly one bike from ebay that has long since been flipped. I've never found a bike worth buying at a thrift shop around here.

I have two with provenance:

I bought my '49 Raleigh Clubman from the son of the original owner, who was a pharmacist in Milwaukee. Actually, that first gent wasn't quite the original owner as the bike was given to him in 1950 to settle a debt.

I bought my '50 Raleigh Clubman from the original owner, who worked at Raleigh USA in Boston during the summers when he was a college student and bought this bike to commute from a suburb into downtown Boston. It even came with a small bottle of touch-up paint, which isn't all dried up.

'89 Cannondale CR USA/used to see if I liked Cannondale frames. 4 1/2 builds since.
'96 Cannondale R400 USA/new bought specifically for the frame color. 3 builds so far.
'98 Trek 7000ZX USA/new Ordered based on an ad in Bicycling. Replaced fork, saddle and shifters, been a splendid choice for me.
'99 Cannondale CAAD3 frameset USA/new with 1 build plus minor tinkering.
'00(?) Santana Arriva SE USA/new now parting out as the kids are grown and gone, but still mostly here.

Kids builds are an old Olmo frameset for my son and a '90 Bianchi Volpe bought new (Japan or Taiwan) as NOS for my daughter and I converted to STI.
