Identify this older aluminum Trek prease

I'm picking this bike up tomorrow because it's on the cheap. Just wanted to see if anyone knew what it was. Thanks.

What is the serial number? Check with vintage-trek.com to ID the model. There should be a model number on the chain stay also.

The aluminum catalogs at Vintage Trek are incomplete, so hard to say. I'm gonna guess 1986 or 87 Trek 2000.

Ooh, I see they have the color charts for aluminum. Looks like ecru with burgundy decals - 1987 2000 is my guess.

Could still be a 1986 as they don't specify decal color that year.

The 2000 pic in the 1985 catalog doesn't show the "aluminum" decal on top tube, so probably not that one.

Hope you have smooth roads in your town. Otherwise, I think some 28mm tires will fit (at least some 25s), which would smooth the ride a bit.

1400 is my guess. But it could be an early 1200 as they didn;t always put the # on the seat tube. '88?

Is the white balance on that camera pretty good?

Actually the font's wrong for the 1400, the TREK letters were bigger in 89, 90. Actually got bigger in 1988, but the first 1400 was 89.

Dunno. It was a camera phone pic. I would assume it's pretty dang white, and not off-white.

Hmmm, bright white alu trek with pre-1988 decals. Hmmmm....

I'm guessing the bag behind it is pretty dang white. But the Trek could still be pretty dang white, paints sometimes yellow with age...

FWIW I had a Trek 1420 with 28mm tires and a replacement Tange Cro-molly fork and the ride was nice. I never had a chance to ride it with the original fork so I cannot comment on that. It was a great bike but it was also small for me, otherwise I would not have sold it.

We just used to call those "Trek Aluminums" and leave it at that, with the understanding that it rode a certain way.
Then we'd just look at the components.

Beautiful ride except the seat, of course.

Those tires + that frame (the 2000, that is) will destroy you, unless you only ride on indoor basketball courts.

Shove the baby to the corner, I see you got your priority straight. Congrats, on your score. That's a man's kitchen, your girlfriend should stay out of it.
