So he raised the price once already?
I think it's a great bike, but I would not pay that price. I'm planning a long distance bike/custom frame, and I might end up that high by the time I'm done, but that Raleigh cannot do what I need.

I was told that he collects bikes. (My wife would cut my liver out with a fruit knife while I was asleep if even I could afford such a thing. She might just slice me open if I bought a Raleigh for $3K — and I would not blame her.) ... There is something to be said for not encouraging this nonesense.

Could be fun to just have everyone view his ad several times a day just to drive up the "view" count and see if it makes him raise his price again.

Check out what a Ferrari 12 cyl. GT-250 is worth today. When the collecting 'thing' starts to attach itself to a commodity, all common sense drops out of what is reality for most of us. And we men and women on this forum have watched the collecting 'thing' begin to cling to vintage bicycles. And in a way it's understandable because there are many instances where the machines are tangible art masterpieces, regardless of their intrinsic mechanical prowess — which is often not slouching either. Again, look at the Ferrari.
But — and big but — (am I being obtuse here?) for that sort of money, you could seek out a top flight frame builder and have the Raleigh frame copied exactly. In addition you could have it built in Reynolds 853. You could have it built to exactly fit your body and still have enough money left over to track down all the right components and parts for it, have the paint mixed and applied and custom decals made up besides. No, it will not be a collector's bike. And you will not get your money out if you want to sell it a week later. But you will have a new replica that costs less than a new Pinarelo or Cologno — and about 10K less than the top flight pro Trek that I saw a guy buy the other week. He can afford it. I don't know if he can ride it. Maybe, but he is my age and I don't see the point. But, I was told that he collects bikes. (My wife would cut my liver out with a fruit knife while I was asleep if even I could afford such a thing. She might just slice me open if I bought a Raleigh for $3K — and I would not blame her.) Some people are in the league. Most of us aren't and are not going to be. There is something to be said for not encouraging this nonesense.

I don't see how a bike collector (I know a few from CR) would put much stock in a certificate that "proves" it's been "restored." Most of the CR guys are very sharp eyed, just like teh C&V crowd is.
BTW, it's hard to think that a GT-250 was ever a commodity. When Datsun B-210s reach $500k, that will be the miracle.

Yeah, I'd love a 61cm International or Pro... but prices are all about trending - like an original Richard Sachs in good shape in my size went for low $800s recently, just north of NYC - so go figure - lots of people know about Raleighs, not so many know about handbuilts like Sachs or Stan Pike or the multitude of other awesome builders who produced in aggregate perhaps 1/10 of 1% of the production of the coveted Raleighs. Your good-enough-to ride Pro should only fetch what my good handbuilt should (and by rights should fetch less)- like say $600-800. I like the touch with the parchment certification tho - it will be good to establish provenance in 2075. Market value my a$$.

I agree, RF, that it is pretty, and as close as a used bike can be to being out-of-the-box. But it would have been a very old mass produced box. Note that the owner hasn't even bothered to look up what year the bike was made. The seller's posturing is absurd. Is the OP planning to hang it on the wall? That's the only end that the parchment would speak to.

I'm not defending the seller, I think he's rather odd in a number of ways.

It doesn't even have the special orange derailleur upgrade of this one <https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/2132168786.html>. That would clearly change the value.

This frame is Reynolds 531 Butted Tubes and has the double CC cutout in the bottom bracket.
that CC cutout was one of the now infamous
Raleigh Record Ace bikes. Since this is
a repaint, is it not possible there is some
confusion over what it actually is?
'Course, that RRA that went for mucho dinero
on e-bay a while back might send this seller
off into outer space if that really is the case
and he figures it out.

I'm really starting to enjoy the watching more
than the buying. Guess that makes me an e-bay/
Craigslist voyeur.

Since somebody mentioned the auction had
closed, I went snooping around and found the
sellers other listings:
https://cgi.ebay.com/New-57cm-Tommasi...#ht_500wt_1156
https://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-new-2010-5...#ht_500wt_1156
https://cgi.ebay.com/2010-Specialized...#ht_500wt_1156
Maybe it's just a case of not selling anything
for less than 3,000 bucks?

Still at $2900. If you can't depend on a guy
to raise his price when he says he's gonna,
what kind of a world do we live in anyway?

What I like is that he posts it for $2900 BIN or a "best offer" - then follows it by saying "...will not respond to attempts at getting the price lowered"...
WHAT does he think "best offer" means?
Maybe he thinks it means someone is going to "best" his 2900 offer.

Unless someone who doesn't know how many houses he owns bids successfully on it, I reckon I will be a few years more geezerly than now. Someone wake me up when/if it happens.
