http://www.speedplay.com/speedplayla...asi_large.html http://cgi.ebay.com/Masi-Special-Fae...89997307534577 My hunch is that you'll agree with me. I respect Scott as a collector and historian, and it was done by Alberto, but I think it's too aggressive and kills the mojo still living in the unrestored version. Candy paint pooling in the shorelines - yuck. I can only hope the bike was beyond saving in its original nick. |
I think it would be cooler to take a '51 Masi Special and repaint with Schwinn Decals myself...

If I ever do another refinish, I like the idea of a cartoon character or something fun.
Not in my thoughts to rebadge something into a Masi, or anthing like that. My 8mm Mauser would not like to be called an AK. |

Then there's the question: "What is a MASI?"
Just thought I'd mention it. -Kurt Trying to stir up trouble? ;) (my flame bait answer is to say that "real" Masis were built in California.) |

This wasn't to try to pull the wool over someone's else to pass it off but more so something I could ride and not feel bad about if it got stolen, damaged etc... As for the using your own name. I actually had some decals made up with my last name on my carbon ebay road frame build and could actually do that since I have three more sets of decals. I was doing a repaint anyways since I was planning on brazing on some dt shift bosses and cable guides since it originally has stem mounted shifters.
I thought about picking up a Speciale Commuter but then what different is that Taiwan branded Masi to my Schwinnasonic? There's nothing special about newer Masi's in my opinion for what their worth. I'd never try to pass it off as a real deal and specify it's a replica on the frame somewhere. The frame/fork is the only original thing as everything else is Italian...Record low flange wheelset, headset, calipers, Cinelli stem/bars etc... Well everyone is allowed their own opinion and I got what I asked be it positive or negative. |
I don't have a problem with anyone repainting/rebadging a bike to make it look like a more expensive bike as long as they include a disclaimer decal somewhere inconspicuous like on the seat tube down near the bottom bracket. Reputable restorers often include their decal on their work.
Of course, no amount of paint or decals will make a Varsity into a Pinarello so the disclaimer decal would not be necessary. |

Would you put Schwinn decals on a Huffy?

Looked for Saba decals for four years, couldn't source them. I wanted to refinish this bike - paint was in a sorry, sorry state. After removing every pantographed/engraved 'Saba' signature with a Dremel I re-badged it using my own made-up moniker, based upon the Alpine Cycles font.
The result: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1249/...1c546881_b.jpg Since this was now "my" bike, I took the theme to extremes - again using the Dremel - with the complete drillium treatment. My 2 cents... DD |

Personally, I prefer a contrasting cat with my bikes. You can never get them just right trying to match. If that was me, I'd send the cat out for a repaint.

Putting Masi decals on a Schwinn doesn't make it a "replica". It makes it a Schwinn with Masi decals.
Taking a Masi's geometry, design details, etc., and replicating them make it a "replica". Personally, I'm one of those people who think "If you can't afford one of those things that you covet, like a Rolex, or a fancy handbag, or a bicycle, don't buy a fake in the hopes of impressing someone who is dumber than you are." In other words, keep it real. |

Ever see a dingle berry who puts a Lamborghini decal on his beat up Tempo? Like he's fooling someone? Even if he's not trying to fool anyone he looks like a dork?
That's it. |

It's not the same thing. For instance, I take old flashlights and bike lights and replace the innards with superbright LEDs. His plan is the same, only on the outside. For one, you build it yourself. For two, you get something that looks exactly what you want.
I'm not saying I would do what the OP proposed, I'm just saying I can understand his motivation. You can assume he's not wanting to do something tricky, and you can say that's not for you. I just wouldn't diss it as 'phoney' or posing. You either get it, or you don't. |
