Winter projects
 

Instead of manning up and riding in the cold weather, I've succumbed to the lure of yet another bike. Here are a few pictures of some things I'm working on. I will post more and MUCH better pictures as things come together. For now these will have to suffice.
My 84ish Trek 620 tourer. I'm not sure if it'll get repainted, powder coated or just left as is. The paint is pretty beat so it might be a good candidate to try powder coating.http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/v...ewbikes129.jpg

Last is a 74 International that I got from Tom. At some point in this bikes life, someone brazed on d/t shifter mounts, routed the shifter cables under the BB and relocated the braze on for the r/d cable. They also stripped the chrome and painted everything. I'm not sure how this bike will end up as far as chrome goes, but I really want to build it up in homage to the French Constructeurs or close to it. It's going to end up with a few more braze ons, bar ends etc etc. Time will tell how this builds up.http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/v...ewbikes128.jpg

There will be major house cleaning come spring due to the influx of new rides!

Wow! That Raleigh has crank arms from the 'future'. looks like fun builds indeed. I just bought 2 frames myself, not sure what I'm going to do with them yet.:thumb:

Those cranks on my old GC are ummm different. lol. Looks go so far but you've got quite the plate full of projects. Why is it we can't have just one project going at one time? Keep us updated Rob!

no pics, but my winter projects are Carlton Flyer, Colnago Specialissimo, and now an xtracycle conversion on my mtb snow commuter!
Oh and px-10, but that probably won't be done by spring so I don't know if that counts.

I've finished every winter project I set up for myself, including a quick conversion of my Iron Horse MTB to winter beater with PB fenders, ergo drops, and complete with purple bartape. Luckily this has "allowed" me to ride at least a couple days a week so far this winter.

I am trying to avoid anymore winter projects, unless you count the planning portion of my spring project (custom cross bike)...

I've been waiting for weeks to pick up my project. It should be in my hands on Saturday.

I mistakenly thought the modern Dura Ace won the prize as the ugliest cranks ever... I like the Raleigh, though.

I picked up a nice Shogun a few months ago, and the husband and I have been slowly getting it into shape. I was hoping to do it all myself, but the original parts were frozen stiff and I was unable to get them off - argh. Anyhow, I've gotten all the new components donated by a couple of bike businesses and some readers of Lovely Bicycle, and when this bicycle is finished I will give it away to someone who would benefit from it. It is cleaning up nicely so far!

My own winter project, the Fothergill, has reached the "now ride it a lot!" stage... so I'm keeping a close eye on the weather forecast.

I like that long wheelbase Trek. Looks like some interesting possibilities with those bike builds.

I'm working on a Schwinn Super Sport that I just picked up from forumite DCV45. Its a 26" monster frame thats a bit big for me, but I think it will be a fun bike once its complete.

I'm half way through my winter project. It's my vision/version of a Road/Path/Racer/Clubman. It is a project that I wanted to do on the cheap, well so much for that idea. Funny how before you start a project you have one idea for it. Then as it moves along the whole project changes. Oh well I'm excited to get her finished.

Yeah! And funny that, when it's all done, you will have forgotten most of the ideas you dropped along the way. Those that you haven't forgotten --along with parts you bought and did not use-- will continue to haunt you until you use them.

My other winter project is sitting in a bike box that was delivered on my front porch this morning!

I finally got going on the '51 Durkopp last night. Got the front Fender with its attached bullet headlamp, which some moron painted silver, sanded down to the bare aluminum and ready to polish. Rear fender should be done tonight. Frame is up next.

I'm still removing rust on the frame and collecting the last few parts for my Schwinn World Voyageur. Its gonna be 650B with hub brakes, 7 speed, Old Deore SP derailleurs, wide double TA Crankset, Barcons, and some fenders.

The Dawes is still a parts hunt but its getting closer to build time every day.

Schwinn Twinn Sport is getting a set of NOS Chrome drop bars, correct saddles and maybe fenders. Plans are to do a 50 mile MS ride in the spring with my 12 year old.

My Jeunet 630 is very near complete. The Atax seatpost should arrive any day, then I'll set up the Mafacs and take it for a spin. The Grand Cru brakes are on their way for my powdercoated Voyageur. Then it's on to setting up the brakes and shifters and wrapping the bars. I also have two mixtes (one is a 1x5, the other with a flip/flop hub) for which I need to build wheels.

1-Find a Shimano Flight deck head unit for 9-sp Ultegra, then get it to work with my harness.

2-Possibly complete a frameset trade, then rebuild that with the parts from the one I traded.

3-Finish an '84 Peugeot mixte modernization.

4-Sell all the parts I don't need, or trade 'em.

5-Completely restore a 1964 Hercules women's 3-sp (SA). No rust, but needs frame-off restoration.

6-Collect the needed parts for an Ironman build.

7-Research into putting cyclo's on all my bikes.

The THUN cranks are quite different looking. I still haven't decided if I like the way they look or not. What really surprised me was how light they are, much lighter than they look. The Gran Course needs some paint work of the fork and a few touch ups here and there but should be ready to roll very soon, just need to get some cables.

The Trek will be built into a dedicated tourer, whether or not I will use it to its full potential remains to be seen. I'd love to do some long tours but time constraints are always an issue.

Colonel, how do you like the front rack on the Jeunet? I'm thinking about a rack similar to that for my International. I'd like to run a larger handlebar bag (paging Dan!) for keeping all my diabetic "needs" close at hand and want something that will support a bigger bag. I'm also considering putting a pair of braze ons on the fork for the rack to attach to (similar to this) http://www.flickr.com/photos/ratrock...7622335870141/ I found a plater not too far from me that gave me a quote of around $250 to chrome the whole International. I think I'd like to see the whole bike done in nickel.... That'd be fun.

I will be starting a separate thread for each bike to work through my ideas and ask for some input.

The bike to which you linked is pretty awesome, but finding a rack to fit those braze ons would be nearly impossible and even then, likely cost prohibitive. If you're going to use a big handlebar bag like an Ostrich or Berthoud, consider the VO Constructeur rack. You could also use a Nitto or VO rack that mounts with P clamps, but P clamps just don't look very good. For a lightweight bag with only a cell phone and your meds, you should be fine with a rack that mounts to the brake like an old TA rack or the new Dia Compe ENE rack. The rack on the Jeunet is probably French, but I'm not sure of the manufacturer. I bought it via eBay from Old Spokes Home. It has a bigger base than the more common TA racks. I can't tell you anything about how it functions yet, but I do like how it looks. It seems plenty secure. But, admittedly, it is as much bike jewelry as anything.

Have you considered adding braze ons for cantilevers for use with 650B rims? A nickel plated, Nervex-lugged International with Hetres would certainly be something cool.

I'm jealous of your seat stay bridge fender mount. Shogun had the sense to do that on their touring bikes.

Pics are a little fuzzy - but my winter project is a 1976 Pogliaghi that I purchased here on C&V along with the super record derailleurs. Frame is psm stamped on seat tube.
The Yellow crankset match better than originally anticipated - I am told that they are early 70's from an old viner. Vintage Regal in place. A little ways to go...

I am probably going to go with yellow housing - all black handlebars/tape. Can't wait to get this on the road.

Phillyrider - nice looking bike. Like the cranks. The shifters you bought from me will fit in nicely. Yellow housing will look cool.

Thanks...As you can see there's a reason I moved quickly on the shifters. I really want to get this build done to see how the frame handles. It's been sitting a while.

Justin, the 1983 Shogun I have has a traditional brake bridge drilled for a brake bolt. The 1984 Shogun has the "proper" bridge with the 5mm threaded fender mount. I paid the frame builder who modified the 1983 for 650B an extra $25 to replace the old bridge with a new one with the mount (and placed 10mm lower to fit a 650B fender without a huge spacer).

I paid about $100 to have the original canti studs removed and new ones brazed on to work with 650B wheels. So, for any touring frame that has room for fat tires and needs a repaint anyway, for an extra $100 or so, you can turn it into a 650B canti-brake tourer.
