I don't really get what is being ruined. however what I want to know is, are that lady's boots SPD compatible and do they sell that at payless?

Anyone who went to the 2010 NAHBS would have recognized that there were "categories" of attendees, and the hipsters were a big one.

The hipsters crowded around their particular interests, the young cowboys hogged the DA2 demonstrators and the CF builders. The middle-aged men were looking at lugs and the hipsters' girlfriends.

I have always been impressed with hipster enthusiasm.

I grew up with paper boy bikes, Sting Ray clones, and coveted the "10-speeds." Gears and frames make me tick.
A lot of hipsters grew up with BMX and trick bikes, and they know what they're doing around a bike, their way.
A lot of mtb guys grew up with BMX and moved to trails and mtb's, and that's a whole different cabbage, to me.
Get us all together, and we often don't know what the other is talking about.

But it comes back to two wheels and a grin.
Whether it's "watch this" or "let's ride" or "find some dirt," it's still about bikes.

There is some chagrin about hipsters buying nice road frames and doing the nasty with them.
There aren't that many, and who else will buy a stripped $15 Shogun with a $25 saddle and $100 wheels for $400 ?

+1 I bit my tounge, but was thinking exactly the same. All that work and you TIG weld it? Sure, he'll fillet braze it for another $400 or build a lugged frame for more, but that wouldn't be the guy I'd want to build a fillet brazed or lugged frame for me. I'd want someone who has plently of experience doing just that.

i'm disturbed by the many antbike-mike-flanigan-esque moustaches i saw at nahbs 2010. been seeing them more n more on philly-area bikefolks. (the male ones, at any rate.) i have no problem with the 'stache itself, but the "trend" aspect creeps me out.

fwiw, i think, until recently, the term "hipster" was used mostly by hipsters to describe other hipsters who they don't like. These days, it's reached a tipping point, where too many ppl are using it to insult random ppl, many of whom don't exhibit true hipster characteristics.

I thank you for the article. I seriously don't see what this has to do with hipsters. Hipsters don't build bikes. They are into the "fashion" of bikes as an accessory for their tattoos, sister's cut-off jeans and deep-V t-shirts. The guys at Sycip are just getting rad building frames. More power to them.

531phile 02-02-11 08:30 PM

I always wanted to get a Sycip frameset. Wanted one since 2000. Sycip is a legit framebuilder. Been doing it for a while. Nothing wrong with some publicicity in Wired magazine.

Now if you want to see a Hipster bike company. Handsome bicycle is it. Two of their three bikes are based off the Bridgestone XO-1 geometry, but with 700c wheels. Not a whole lot of original thinking. I don't think they even build their own bikes like Sycip. Plenty of 'stache shots on their site. In fact their decals for their headtube is a 'stache????

Here's an interesting Sycip creation. He told me that it was an experiment and it is only good for slowing you down.

Sure hope so with the disc brake acting on the BB spindle.

Velognome 02-02-11 09:06 PM

^^^^^well that should work almost as well as....well not pedaling? Should add an e-hub to help with forward motion while the're at it. Silly really.

LesterOfPuppets 02-02-11 09:11 PM

On a fixed drivetrain it should theoretically work just as well as a disc rotor mounted on the rear hub.

EDIT: unless your chain breaks, then you'd wish the rotor was on one of your hubs.

i may or may not have have a distant relative in arcade fire, ride fixed gear, and love the disc brake application above, but i am not a hipster. :) i grew up on road cycling and my favorite ride is a hand made lugged tommasini.

Just wanted to clear the air, had the day off and wanted to have fun with the title. I'm actually too old to be a hipster,(whatever that is), as my college age daughter points out like a lance to barbed me with. Just because one looses a bunch of weight, obsesses over lugged steel, sports a chin beard & narrow squared glasses does not make one a Hipster, according to her. I tell her, It makes me feel young and healthy, and I'm considering a Tat of some sort so get used to it, which made her actually laugh.

Boosh. Couldn't have said it better.

Hipsters aren't new anyway.

Teaching "Howl" to my seniors:

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,"

Bet those guys were just as annoying, even if they weren't into riding fixed gear bicycles.

And yeah, yeah, I know from Beats. My dad was (is, and will always be) a Beat. People say: "Curt, you're such a hippie," and he draws himself up and says: "I'm not a hippie, I'm a Beat." Guess he was a hipster, too. He's now 75 years-old, but he still smokes (not cigarettes) every day, wears old Levis and black t-shirts, and finds jazz enlightening.

Unusual clothing, hair styles and lug cuts (or method of construction for that matter) are all fashion. Bicycles are machines, get over it. Our old bikes were likely built by some drunk guy who hated his job running a multi-flame brazing machine for a crap company for crap wages. Somehow when I bought it, it got soul.

No matter who you are or what you wear or ride, 2% like you, 2% hate you and 96% don't have an opinion and are happy to leave you alone.

I make TIG welded bike frames and have for thirty years. I haven't had a shave or a haircut for several months. I wear camo or Carhartts (except when riding) and the bill of my hat is rolled 180 degrees almost into a tube.

You guys look funny to me too, but I still like you and I sure hope at some point when I pull my rusty van over to offer a spare tube you don't look so frigging frightened. "woodchucks/Rednecks" sometimes have drivers licenses and bikes at the same time.

I guess "community" is as much about pushing people out as bringing them in.

I got the impression the OP was using sarcasm and was more motivated by posts that followed to offer a point of view that illustrates the absurdity of these labels and that I can remove stuck seat posts and all of you will need that at some point so be careful who you insult!

Maybe they are hipsters, whatever that means.

They are also good supporters of the local bike scene.

I happen to like the way their bikes ride, and the way they look.

......and their new designs keep moving forward, while keeping a firm hold on a Bridgestone philosophy that many enjoy.

For example, I like their knock-off of the XO-1.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/...04403d7d_o.png

At the end of the day, they get people on bikes, and that is a very good thing.

They also provide another alternative to the countless legions of Surlys around here, and that's fine as well.

Truth be told, I had no idea the relationship between so called "hipsters" and bicycles until maybe a week ago. Well. . . anyway

I've actually just never heard anyone making fun of them like bicycle people do until I came to this forum in early '08.

Maybe it's just an internet thing, the making fun of hipsters.
