Craigslist Super Course for my wife and son
On Saturday afternoon I saw the very recently posted Craigslist ad below for a 52cm 1976 Super Course MkII. I was there in 15 minutes. It had new Kenda tires, new brakes, new cable housings, fresh tuneup, and an old sprung vinyl Midway saddle. It was way too small for me but I thought just about perfect for my wife and 12 year old son. I figured my fast growing son could ride it for a couple years and that it would be around for my wife to ride.
He was asking $300, but said "Done" to my offer of $247 which was all the cash I had with me. When I got home the Raleigh was a hit with my son and 4 of his friends that were over. They all took turns riding it. My wife just rolled her eyes at the thought of another bicycle to store. I think she will like it when we get her out on the Veloway.
It appears to have the stock Huret derailleur and gearing. I am thinking about installing a Suntour AR(Alpine Range) derailleur and a NOS Suntour 14-38 freewheel I have picked up to have better gearing for the hills. I also have a AR front derailleur. Does anyone see any pitfalls to this plan? I would of course store all the stock parts for posterity.

They'll look a little modern on your bike, but I think Suntour AR's are nice.
Apart from that, I am not familiar with an "Alpine range" model.
The ones shown in Disraeli gears (like the RD4400 below) took up to only 34T.

PS - We need to see a pic of your bike !

I think that you may be right. After studying Disraeli Gears it looks like it was the AG derailleurs were made for the 38 tooth rear sprocket. Anyone want to trade a Suntour 14-34 for a 14-38? I will try to get some pictures up soon. Does the link to the Craigslist ad work?

The GTL version handled the specific 38T freewheel:

If it has Huret Challenger stuff on it, save them! I'm looking for a set for my MK II.

What factors does one have to keep in mind if someone wanted to replace the crankset on this Super Course? Bottom Bracket? Threading?
Can one use one of the vintage Stronglight triples?

I'm looking for Huret derailleurs for a vintage Austro Daimler.
Willing to pay a fair price if you swap out.
My Super Course has Simplex and I believe it is a '73.

Auchencrow,
On the the Show us your Super Course thread it looked like you replaced the Crank with a Shimano 600 crankset. I am currently taking a 600 Biopace crankset off my Davidson. Would that be a good choice for this Super Course? What did you do as far as the bottom bracket and spindle?

I do not know what length the BB spindle was, so I am afraid I'm not much help there. It has the (presumably original) "Made in England" cups on it though. Bear in mind mine was a cottered crank.
I have a second '73 SC with the identical crank and cup set-up, but it came to me that way.
I have another '72 SC with a Shimano DA crank: The cups on it are Shimano - so they must be 24TPI.
- Note that all three bikes have 68mm shells.
Actually (and contrary to the generalization Sheldon made about them) I think all Carlton built-SC's are 24TPI - not the Nottingham-Raleigh 26TPI.
. . . So what does all that mean???
It means that if your Carlton SC bb shell is 68 mm, you (probably) won't have difficulty finding a suitable Japanese spindle that will work, and likely can even sub the cups if you have to.
- Now regarding the Biopace crank though, I have nothing against them on 80's Panasonics and such, but I think the elliptical thing would look out of place on a 70s SC.
- I should add that I think your '76 Nervar cotterless crank is pretty nice, and personally I would leave it. (The only reason why I "upgraded" my TT from cottered was because the crank was damaged.)
