Need help choosing a new groupset

I want/need a new FD and RD for my PX-8. The FD broke and I am currently using a Raleigh FD. I was going to purchase a new simplex one, but they cost more than what I am willing to pay for plastic and Simplex SLJ is way too expensive. Since I am going to ride this all the time I wanted to have a decent groupset close to the vintage of my bike. Would the RD in this set work with a 10 speed and, if not, what group would you all recommend?

I recommend a Simplex SX610 RD in combination with a Simplex SJA102 FD.
These are still resonably priced mid level components from Simplex from the 80's and are good shifting, reliable derailleurs, that's why Peugeot used them on many of their mid level bikes back then. There is a lower model FD than the SJA102, that worked just as well, but it still has some plastic on it (at the clamp body) that you might not like. These front derailleurs are pretty much no frills and the have mostly stamped metal peices for it's mechanism, but that does not detract from their performance. You have to go to the more expensive SLJ models to get rid of most of the stamped steel parts on the FDs.
Check them all out at Velobase.com.

I recommend those same derailers. I have them on acouple of bikes.

What's a Rieghey?

It's a missspelling. Raleigh

Wait.. Which ones are you recommending? The simplex or the shimano 600?

Grand Bois 03-07-11 02:59 PM

Simplex.

Okay let me restate what I said above. I cannot find simplex components without plastic that are worth the asking price. I know that I can get all metal simplex stuff, but for half of what they are asking for one FD on Ebay I can get a Shimano 600 RD and FD. So can you point me to a place that has an all metal Simplex FD for less than $40 or do you know if the Shimano 600 RD will work with my 10 speed?

Chombi 03-07-11 05:27 PM

Most of us C&Vers naturally go Peugeot = Simplex, but there's nothing wrong with also going with the Shimano 600s, If anything, from what I hear, they comes very close or matches the bulletproof reliability of the Simplex RD/FD I mentioned....they just will not provide the appropriate French "flavor" to your Peugeot build
Last time I bougt a similar to the SJA102 Simplex FD (the brazed on version, I think called the SJA122) it cost me around 36 bucks NOS at eBay about two years ago. Lots of Simplex FDs go on sale at eBay everyday that if you wait long enough, you should be able to snag one at the price you are looking for. But if you find the Shimano 600s at the price you want, go for it! They are good too!

I agree they won't be the appropriate blend of countries, but I am going to use this bike daily and need to take off and store any hard to come by and expensive items. I would rather not put Shimano on this bike, but hey $45 bucks for Shimano 600 FD and RD is a price I can live with. The $99 for a Simplex FD on ebay I cannot live with.

I paid $21 for an SX610, a an SJA 102 and a long cage SX810 on eBay less than a year ago. They're in good shape, too. This is the SX610.

I get an email whenever a Simplex, T.A. or Stronglight item is listed on eBay.

I like Shmano 600, too. I built my wife's mixte using all 600 components.

But will this RD work with my 10 speed? No one has answered the question yet.

I don't have the experience to say. I feel confident, however, that it could shift to all ten gears. If want to stay with Simplex I have a Criterium derailleur and shifter set I with which I'd part.

BestSportEver 03-07-11 10:36 PM

Specifically the problem is finding a FD at reasonable cost.

By ten speed, I think he means 2 X 5.

Is your derailleur hanger threaded and notched for Campy style mounting? If the aswer is no then your stuck with Simplex unless you drill, tap and file the dropout.

Scroll down to derailleurs: http://cyclespeugeot.com/Threading.html

Ooooooh. I incorrectly assumed he was installing a 10s hub. What slant parallelogram RD won't shift to all cogs of 5s freewheel?

That's okay, you're not the only one that posted without reading. It's a midrange seventies Peugeot five speed with a perfectly adequate SX series rear derailer mounted on a claw. He has broken the clamp on the front derailer and needs a new one. He has convinced himself that a replacement Simplex FD is expensive. I'm fresh out or I'd send him one.

Convinced? I would appreciate help finding an all metal Simplex FD that isn't above $50.

As always, I read the entire thread. My mistake was my assumption. I should know better.

I've read this three times and I still don't see where he said it was a 5sp hub. He say's he has a px-8, that's it. What I do see is him referring to it as a "10 speed" numerous times...
anyhow, what is this?

I also have another all metal simplex rd with a claw that you can have for cheap. I have to find a pic though.

BestSportEver 03-08-11 08:35 AM

Again, the problem is finding an All Metal Simplex FD at a reasonable price. If I can't get one for less than $50, why not just switch to a group that is easier to find and cheaper to replace?
