Nuts. Sounds like I shoulda done my homework better. "Order them a size smaller ...and it'll be correct" ??? Dang ..nuts....rats. Well, I'm learning something on this project, which is worth the price of admission. Fact remains, though, I'm using a wheel too big for the frame but heck... I've gotten away with worse transgressions before.

Hmm, maybe that's why we love Paselas: because they're fat. There's a sexual joke lurking in there somewhere, but I can't get it out.
Yes, I read in the Sutherland's manual many years ago that the width rating the width of the flattened casing, bead to bead, divided by 2.5. Still, all tires other than Paselas tend to over-rate their sizes.

I have a set of 27" x 1 1/4" Continental Ultras that look like monster truck tires. Ride like 'em too.

paselas at 27 x 1 1/4 are way smaller than the *same* sized schwalbe marathon to my eye-- the schwalbe is super beefy in comparison-- I think both wider and taller.

Turns out that my Paselas are 27 x 1 1/4 and the Michelin Bib Sport are 27 x 1. Those Paselas are monsters! On my Gitane SC I have 3/4" clearance between the Michelin Bib and the fork crown. With the Pasela it's about 3/8" @ 80 PSI. I like the Michelin Bibs, a very nice vintage tire.

I rode 27 x1 1/4 Serfas Seca tires for a couple years before recently trying the same nominal size Panaracer Paselas. The mounted and inflated Serfas were obviously narrower than their listed size (28 mm actual, rather than 1 1/4=32 mm listed). In contrast, the Paselas measured very close to the predicted/listed size (32 mm). The Paselas also ran higher off the rim, increasing the effective wheel diameter, and reducing fender clearance to the point of creating a problem of rubbing between tire and fender. I readjusting the fenders to the maximum possible clearance under the fork and rear brake bridge and was able to solve the clearance problem. So far I've been enjoying the ride of the wider tires, but wish all manufacturers were more consistent with their listed and actual sizes!

Just measured my Paselas compared against an old set of Hutchinsons @ 80 psi
Pasela 27 X 1 1/4 TGs - true 1 1/4 sidewall to sidewall
Hutchinson 27 x 1 1/4 _ a hair over 1 1/8.
Paselas were a good 1/8 higher in profile.
