Where do i fit in??

I have a late 80s ross that i ride. i know its not and expensive nice bike, but its what i have and what i could afford. Idk how this forum treats low end bikes, so sorry if i seem defensive. I was just wondering if on this forum where would i post in. Is my bike "vintage" as its easily older than 20 years or is there a different place i should post.

thank you for reading and have great day

80s Ross is old enough for this forum. Let's see the pictures..

BTW, I have a Ross MTB, and it's an awesome crappy weather bike and tow vehicle.

Your bike fits in fine. If you enjoy riding it, fixing it....consider yourself home. Now lets see some pics.

PS. Hang around here long enough and you'll soon be talking upgrades and before long you'll be telling us about the most incredible bike you just grabbed at a yard sale.

well i like it alot. my last bike was a huffy 626 it was a piece but i worked up to 30 miles a day on it so it really doesnt matter the bike its all commitment. i just know a few privileged people that get new bikes every year, the really nice ones. they like to talk down the bike i can afford haha. it was a heck of a deal to in my opinion. brand new everything, looks brand new and got it for 40 bucks. just need to adjust the rear brake and shifter. im already bonding with it, today was a 15 mile day.

Hey, when you get into classic steel you can get 'new' bikes every month without breaking the bank!

Shake what your mama gave you!

be forewarned this habit tends to make you end up with more bike projects than you can handle and tub upon tub full of bike parts.

Sounds like a perfect starter for this forum! As everyone has said, stick around here a few months and you'll be posting pics of the latest sweet deal you found on some vintage road bike identical to what you've seen on CL for $300. I made the mistake of finding an old abandoned Bridgestone. Now thanks to these guys I'm sitting here with 8 bikes! :P However, between the ones I snagged for cheap and resold, I've actually pretty much broken even. I basically ended up with a couple nicer road bikes, a mountain bike, a vintage tandem, and a vintage townie for my girlfriend all for free!

amen to that

i love old cheesey department store bikes - flea market is the way to go

I build and published MY "TEN SPEEDS" knowing that we all can't have the top of the line puppy in any given kennel. I have learned, over the years, that there is a lot of hype in the vintage bicycle world. There is nothing wrong with the OP's bicycle, in my opinion.

And, chances are, with the passing of time, we will see more and more of the not so special Velo steeds increase in popularity. One of my favorite bicycles was an old, entry level Legnano that I found at the Dump...

I think most folks here just love old bikes, and appreciate the unassuming, honest bikes we started with.

Amesja 03-31-11 08:12 AM

Ross made some nicer bikes back in the 80's before they decided to get on the department-store BSO treadmill.

Find your own niche that you enjoy as there are many of them. Some folks like a particular brand or style/type of bike. Others are more diversified. Some even like the cheesy BSO's and appreciate their functionality/cost ratio. I personally like under-appreciated but well-built English 3-speeds that clean up into bikes that are much superior to much of what can be bought new these days for under $1000. Find that spot you like and go with it. Any bike that can be cleaned back up and put back into use and won't self-destruct doing the job it was initially designed to do is a good bike in my opinion.

Being frugal and acquiring and using "vintage" items that were well built to standards that most new disposable junk consumer items of today can't even match makes me happy. Decide what makes you happy and just DO IT :-D

Welcome.
A well serviced 20 year old Ross is a way, way better bike than a "modern" department store bike and in my opinion, way more interesting and fun than a $1500 bike shop bike.

Now post some pictures!

true true - but dont you think there are a fair share of CV snobs here too - no offense to anyone by that - being a snob to a particular thing isnt always a bad thing - i am that way with beer quite honestly - bikes not so much

if i like how it looks and i can get it to give me a good ride on a 30 miler we are in business

it is amazing what you can salvage from a "junk" bike. a friend of mine found one someone put out with their garbage. he fixed it( just little adjustments and new wheels and tires) and sold it for $115 $60 profit haha

Photobucket, right click on the Image code (IMG box under the picture), right click on the C&V Forum post you're writing and paste the IMG code in.

Your Ross is still "alive" 20 years later - wonder how many of the 'flash' new expensive bikes sold today will be in 2031? Anything that captures the spirit of Classic and/or vintage cycling is welcome and respected here - provided pictures are posted! Many of us started out on entry level bikes when we were younger and to see similar bikes again brings loads of happy nostalgic memories.

Must post a photo now, or be a hypocrite! Here's a low-end (British) Coventry Eagle Commodore I rescued for free from a shed clearance and built up with old spare parts that were lying around. Deliberately looks tatty so I can leave it chained up safely in public, it's actually a really sweet ride.

Hey... Show us your junk!

RavingManiac 03-31-11 01:51 PM

The most important thing is you are riding, and that's always a good thing.

wilz02wrx 03-31-11 03:47 PM

ok sorry for the cell pics but i cant find the cable to the camera, and its raining outside so had to use the garage.

ok done. as you can see brand new seat and tires. what you cant see new chain. only problem i so far is rear break and shifter not the best. the shifter is as far as it will go up in that pic. so i only have 3 out of 5 gears on back that i can select. so really i have a 6 speed. anyway not bad for 40 bucks to me at least

ftwelder 03-31-11 04:33 PM

Nice. One thing, it's pretty easy to make all those gears work properly without spending any money in many cases. The bike looks like new so it may just need some adjustments and all the gears will work and you can get the brakes working better also.
