"A Sunday in Hell" on youtube
|
Bike riding is great, but the team car drivers are crazy!
|
I just watched aboit 4 minutes and now I want a Benotto, a Gios a Peugeot sedana dn one of those cool la pre Alpina trunk racks.
did I notice SR retrofriction shifters on the Benotto? |
In the mid 70's there was a racer from Iowa that drove a Peugeot 504 with bike rack on the top. It was very cool and euro at the time. Always looked good parked at the races.

Thanks for the link. this is a classic. Sure does bring back a lot
of memories for me. Ahh....... the good days - When Men were Men and steel was real. Johnnybee. |
So many great looking kits, too.

I think the bike in the opening shot has Campagnolo shift levers. But that's no Benotto - that's a De Rosa. Check out the very evident "diamante" chainstays.
Yes, thanks for commenting! ...and thanks for the link to the op. I watched today, for the "bizzilionth" time, while stuck at a soccer tournament. Always good. |
i started this, then had to pause it to sell a bike :)
will finish it a bit later.. cool docu and the union protesters at the beginning were pretty cool.. the police would shut that down so fast in the US |
Everybody speaks Italian, including Eddy....strano..
|
I must have seen bits of this dozens of times at the shop but never say and watched it. great story.
did DeRosa have the Diamante stay back then? I noticed the mechanic was not exactly gentle with the bike and once installing the front wheel let the brake slap against the DT. anyone notice anything odd about the brakes? |
i finished the docu.. good stuff thanks.. and man those dudes ride hard

Great footage, nice music, RIDICULOUS dust, no helmets, no radios...
Merckx, de Vlaemick, Thevenet, Maertens, Moser, wow. Molteni, Brooklyn, Flandria, Lejeune, Peugeot, Raleigh, some real classics. Ahhh, France in the 70's... It really conveys well the drama of a bike race. The shower interviews were great. Thanks for posting this. |
I just watched the first four minutes, took so I can say thank you OP, now back to the clip.
|
Came across this the other day as well and watched the whole thing. I had seen clips of it before, but not in its entirety.
So I was gonna ask you guys, does anyone clean their chain with a brush like that? |

When it comes to pro riders, never trust the decals of the sponsors. They ride what they feel they can win on, always have.
FYI, another Benotto-De Rosa: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8379107...7600517336794/ Though that one's been altered. |

The extra stiffness they provide is also pretty evident when Moser rockets past two fading French riders late in the race to shoot the gap to the leaders - my favorite scene of the movie. ;) |

Phil Edwards from Great Britain was on that squad, though I don't know if he rode Paris-Roubaic that year: http://www.cyclingarchives.com/beeld...?beeldid=19174 But Moser himself also preferred that cable routing: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I4Snyzw2IM...600/checco.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I4Snyzw2IM...1600/Moser.jpg |
Thanks for posting this link, that is an incrdibly cool video. I almost hate to tear myself away for my ride this morning!
|
I was surprized to here Raymond Poulidors name mentioned in the film. Wow, just googled Raymond Poulidor. He was 40 years old in this race and I believe the last year of his career. Amazing, and he never wore the Yellow Jersey. Finished 3rd in his final tour of '76.
|
Great stuff. Eddy adjusting his own saddle with a loaned spanner. Classic. (and not a piece of Shimano gear in sight:)
