whoa, I forgot about VFMF.

I saw Yo La Tengo at the First Unitarian and at the end of the last song the lead dude ripped all of the strings off of his guitar. Very un-yo la tengo like.

I saw them with some kiddie indie rock band, who were actually really good, and what's left of Sun Ra's Arkestra. IT WAS AMAZING. It was the last show on the tour...you could tell they were REALLY into it and they just rocked the house.

Yo La Tengo is another of those bands I generally don't care for much on record...but live??? WOW!

that i can agree with. Their studio albums put me to sleep. Live they're a different story.

I had no idea Landshark beer was from Jimmy Buffet. That explains it!

I've always wanted to see Sun Ra's Arkestra....are they as awesome as I hope they are?

Chris_in_Miami 05-12-11 04:11 PM

Jimmy Buffet, don't even get me started on "trop rock." In a previous life, I was in a punk rock band and our drummer who lived in the Florida Keys got us a gig during a day-long music festival at a big spring break hotspot down there (Holiday Isle.)

We discovered that the beach bar next to the stage was owned by Bertie Higgins, so we dropped four increasingly off-key and obnoxious renditions of "Key Largo" into the set list. Maybe we expected Bertie to come out an throw coconuts at us, but I don't think anyone really noticed...

KonAaron Snake 05-12-11 04:15 PM

I knew I had lived in Florida too long when I started to not hate Jimmy Buffet. The damage was done...I actually kind of like him now (hiding head in shame).

I've seen them twice, once with Sonic Youth and once with Yo La Tengo...

They're amazing musicians, even though they change members like Menudo.

Speaking of which...is Frank Black's line "they pull another Menudo" in reference to the Ramones not one of the funniest things written?

"I don't care if they're real or they're pseudo, don't care if they get any higher, I hope that someone retires...they pull another Menudo"

gomango 05-12-11 05:00 PM

....and now for something completely different.

These will blow the carbon out of your speakers.

Loudest bands I've ever heard live include Wire, Hüsker Dü, and of course the Clash.

Like a 747 landing right on your forehead. :)

Poguemahone 05-12-11 05:38 PM

Best shows?
P-Funk, 1979, Cap Center.
Mekons, late eighties, Trax in C'ville

Other memorables: Clash, Television, Public Enemy, Talking Heads, Thomas Mapfumo (absolutely superb, actually), King Crimson (several times), Merle Haggard (don't knock Merle), Richard Thompson (multiple times, the best by far being at the Iriqious CLub in Roanoke)

Worst shows: Grateful Dead (wasn't too bad because I nodded off they were so boring), Clash (second time, awful).

All time worst: Jefferson Starship. I actually went to see Rory Gallagher, who was opening for them. Unbeknownest to me, Paul Kantner had used a particularly derogatory term for an Irishman to Gallagher and Gallagher, despite reportedly being a very mild human being, beat the crap out him. Neither Kantner or Gallagher were there that night. Kantner I could have easily dealt without, but the loss of the G-man was a mortal blow.

Just plain weird: the very first Gwar show ever, at the New Horizons cafe in RVA years back. I had gone to HS with Chuck Vargas, who developed many of their costumes with Hunter Jackson. At that point, everything was made of paper mache and the main prop was Joy dishwashing liquid. Chuck and Hunter had been trying to make a sci-fi movie in the old Milk Bottle building, and a local punk band, Death Piggy, was practicing next door. Somehow this merged/mutated into Gwar.

Probably an obvious question Pogemahone, but have you ever seen the Pogues?

Mark Knopfeller?

KonAaron Snake 05-12-11 07:04 PM

Dire Straits had their moments.

Yes, they did. But Mark Knofler is a consistent performer and a great guitarist. I have two CD's that I play the hell out of: Mark Knopler and Chet Atkins - "Neck and Neck", and a recording of Dire Straights playing at Albert Hall with Eric Clapton standing in for an absent band member.

BTW - any Delbert McClinton or Roy Buchanan fans in the house? Roy's "Livestock" LP rocks the house.

27 :)

Zaphod Beeblebrox 05-12-11 07:19 PM

Too bad Col. J isn't here...he's away for the weekend, but I know he's a big fan of that kind of stuff Bossman.

I agree about Knopfler, he's a real pro. I've got a good folksy kind of album he did called "The Ragpickers Dream". Its good.

They just did their "Farewell" tour in the US back in March. Flogging Molly is cool too...as are the Dropkick Murphys

yeah but did you catch that flogging Molly song in a car commercial? Sellouts! :)

Actually it might have been the Pogues. I get them mixed up.

Which reminds me, one of the great shows I've been to recently, Devotchka. ANyone else here into them?

sailorbenjamin 05-12-11 08:02 PM

I like Dire Straights a lot but when I put them into Pandora I get all kinds of 80s fluff rock. When I put Mark into Pandora I get lots of nice folk and Emmy Lou Harris and stuff like that.

cuz they all sound pretty much the same.

I can probably think of half a dozen american punk bands that all sound the same too

try putting "tribe called quest" into pandora. Its been blowing my mind with good hip hop.

Oxymoron. :D

Zaphod Beeblebrox 05-12-11 08:09 PM

that was way too easy of a set up.

i'm sorry but Eric B. & Rakim is cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y1Emb7Jyks <--this is probably PG-13 rated.

I had no idea they were touring, I wonder if Shane MacGowan was with them? I played a horrible venue on Cape Cod with the Dropkicks in the mid 90's, I think it was a smoothie bar.

Speaking of car commercials, did you catch the Mitsubishi ad with the Fall's "Blindness?"

I think the 'farewell' part of the tour was that this was gonna be Shane's last tour with them. I'm not sure if the band is gonna continue without him or not.

+1 on Devotchka.

Got to see them perform at a local radio station for a live session.

......and three times at local clubs.

Wow, I don't read a thread for a day and look what happens, nine pages.

Complete thread-jack too, well done.

...carry on.:)

Emmylou connects the dots to so many vibrant people. Colin Linden/Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Lyle Lovett, Mary Gauthier...
