Doug does powder coating in his garage, using a large industrial oven. He's a bike/car guy who loves refinishing bike frames. He pays attention to the details, such as keeping the coating thin and masking off critical areas (note the canti bosses & crown race area in my pic above). His prices are reasonable enough that people send him frames from other states, and still get a better deal than if they had the coating done locally. @tarsi (see post #1587 above) shipped his Trek frame to Doug from California. Obviously Doug has to add a nominal fee for repacking & shipping. If you want him to refinish your frame, the only caveats I would offer are:

-If your frame or fork has chrome on them, have them media blasted locally with walnut shells or baking soda before sending them to him. The sand blaster that he sub-contracts with doesn't seem to know how to be careful around chrome.

-If you have intricate lugwork or other features that you wanted masked, I suggest you buy the special high-temperature masking tape and do this yourself after media blasting. Doug is happy to do basic masking as noted above, but isn't too keen on spending hours trimming tape.

-He doesn't especially like doing white, as it requires that he carefully scrub his oven beforehand to keep any stray color specks out of the finish.

-He doesn't pick your color, and he doesn't do disassembly. Past experience with churlish customers necessitated this policy.

-If you want him to be careful when shipping your frame back to you, then pack it how you want it when you send it to him. Makes everybody happy that way.

If you've got a frame that you want refinished, PM me and I can give you his contact info. He's done nine frames for me so far, and all of them have turned out great. Oh, and he's a nice guy to boot!

Takes me back to high school when I had a yellow Cannondale bag just like the one I just got off Ebay. Mounted to my 1984 Trek 560.

I turned the '87 Elance 400D into a 400T by swapping everything over from a '93 1420. Just gotta get the right saddle on there and we'll see how it rides this spring.

I have an 86 that I've bastardized into a 600/Suntour triple machine. This is my favorite Trek color- the blue they used is so beautiful. I love how you can look "into" the paint a few feet!

What are you thinking of for the saddle? I ended up going with an Avocet Touring II.

Hey Law- I'm really interested as to what you have going on there, gearing wise. Friction Suntour shifters? Are those the special "Scott" shifters?

Wow- you can actually see through your map case! The ones I have have been yellowed (more "ambered") by age and sun and dirt.

The 1984 brochure just calls them 'Aero Handlebars'. I don't remember any branding on them but I love them!

The catalog says they're Belleri Aero Alloy.

That doesn't look like the Belleri logo that I'm familiar with... That's pretty cool the way the bars sweep forward like that from the stem. I don't know if that would be a thing for me or not...

The forward sweep looks very comfortable to me. It looks like it would match the angle of my wrists riding on the tops.

The white Trek 400.. My run around town messenger bike. Glad you like, feeling is mutual. Things have changed component wise. The friction Suntour went to Shimano SIS DT and the tear DR went to Ultegra 6700. Cogs are still Shimano 600 14-28 with a single 46T up front
