1983 48 cm Specialized Sequoia in the Stable

This week yielded a fantatic Ebay score for our household. My wife is on the smaller side and I always have an eye out for nice bikes in the 48-50 range with reasonable geometry, not 75 deg seat tubes an 68 deg head angles etc. This Sequoia seemed to be priced a little high at first, then I pulled the trigger, and then was shocked when I got it out of the box. I have honestly seen bikes with more wear and tear on showroom floors.

Suntour Superbe brakes and pedals, Avocet crankset and saddle, tires - everything there and near mint. It will likely stay in this form for a bit and see how she likes it. Her current ride is a Miyata seven14 with somewhat similar geometry, but I think the sequoia will fit her a little better. Possibly convert to 650b and upright position in the future, we will see how it goes.

.... As much as I would like one, I would have to sell something to make room in the pen for it, and am not ready to part with any of them for now

If you're talking about mine, it's a 60cm, so it's too small. Close call!

Based on a spec sheet that used to be posted on the Miyata/Specialized yahoo group (which seems to have disappeared from the file database), mine was marketed as an '83. I think yours may be an '82 or earlier. Mine has a Sugino AT crankset and Suntour Symmetric top-mount shifters. It is in very similar shape to yours, hardly ridden and all original, though it did suffer some scrapes to the paint as the result of poor storage.

JYB, I wonder if the top mount shifters aren't specced because they'd hit the top tube?

Why, did these shifters typically have issues? They are original on mine (didn't notice the deviation from the catalog spec until you pointed it out), and there's a couple mm of clearance. But I guess mine aren't technically top-mount as they are mounted to a band clamp.

I just went down and looked at the space near the shifters. there is barely room for my pinky between the tt and the shifter tips. Those top mount ones would indeed push it even closer.

Oh, I get it. I was reading toptube but thinking downtube for some reason. Makes more sense now!
