70s Peugeot Question

Hey everyone,
I want to buy a new chain for my peugeot UO-8. Will any chain work as long as I shorten it to the the right length?

No - you are looking for a 5-speed chain (assuming it`s geared). Ask at your LBS and they will be able to help you. A modern 10-speed chain would be much to narrow for your purposes.

devinfan - Could be right - But considering the bikes age you really need to post pics of its components - French bikes can be very, very picky at best...

+1 5 speed chain if you have the age right and have not changed out the wheelset to something with more speeds.

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

For the best compatibility with Atom or Maillard Freewheels which I suspect your bike most likely have, will be a Sedis Sedisport chain..

Since you are new 'round these parts, did you buy the UO-8 on the Dallas Craigslist?

Why would not an SRAM PC8x0 (where x = 5, 7, 9, etc) do? I run PC870s on 5-speed and 6-speed freewheels with no trouble.

But since the bike is French, you have to install it with proper deference and adoration.

Thanks guys. So I want a 5 speed chain eventhough this old bike is a 10 speed? And I have all of the original parts on the bike. I did not get this bike on the Dallas craigslist.

the old bike is a '10 speed' because it has 10 gears, 2 at the front, 5 at the back. (2x5=10)

new bikes have 16 or 20+ gears, with 8, 9 or 10 cogs at the back.
These need special chains called 8, 9, or 10 speed chains.
