87 Schwinn High Sierra - Fork/Parts Needed

HI:

I am an old Schwinn Bicycle Store employee originally from MI working at the Bike Haus in Brighton, MI.

I have a 1987 23-inch Black Chrome High Sierra that I purchased new while working at the store.

I am in need of a new fork as the threads have stripped on the steer tube after making a modification when I built the bike new; re-routed the front brake cable to a fork mounted hanger vs. through neck as original. Thought it was cool at the time; not so much now. I want to keep the bike. I like it. In addition to this the left crank arm now has stripped the threads (at the pedal) after years of laying the bike on its side when stopping. No kickstand; thought that was cool too.

Overall, I am looking for a replacement fork and/or a complete/near complete bike to help this old girl along and breath some new life into her. I do not want to replace it with a new bike although some are very appealing.

I have seen older posts with complete bikes in this frame size and also discussion of someone having a frameset (or the whole bike itself - bought two and have them hanging in their garage in CA or something like that). I called on one but it was sold last year. I have also seen a few post by folks that have found these bikes and then fixed them up for their use.

Would appreaciate any assistance with parts or whole bikes for sale or knowledge/leads regarding or suggestions for potential fixes. Again, it is a 1987 High Sierra Black Chrome, 23-inch frame; Suntour roller cams and all.

Regards,

Greg

I would be talking to a frame builder about getting that fork repaired. Post pictures of how messed up it is. Threads can be repaired, steering tubes can be replaced, etc. Try to save that nice chrome. Otherwise, you are going to have a fork that does not match.

While you might luck out and find a replacement fork, often, that is the first thing damaged on a bike.

That large of a High Sierra is going to be extremely hard to find. If you are set on finding that exact bike, be prepared to pay top dollar, monitor ebay and use a C/L search engine. Realize that almost all C/L sellers have zero interest in shipping a bike.

Thanks much for the quick response and suggestion of a frame builder. I will attempt to get some pictures together.

I have a 21" High Sierra and I'd kill for a 23".

I second repairing what you have - you will never find an appropriate fork in the black chrome color.

I think Schwinn had the smoked/black chrome finish in some other mtb models also, like the Impact, that could be a donor if the repair doesn't work.

True. I almost bought a giant impact last fall. it might have worked, though had canti brakes. not sure how those rollercams fit into the equation.
