What happens to the pro's bikes when they're done with them???

For Father's day i got a great present from my 15 month old daughter - a DVD set of the 1998 Tour De France and 1998 Giro d'Italia - both featuring Panatani prominently.
I was lusting after all the beautiful machinery and it got me wondering what happens to all the pro team bikes???
Do the manafacturers keep them? do the pros keep them? do the sponsors get them? are they sold? (if so where)?
there must be thousands of these bikes from years gone by (the Tour de F has been going over 100 years so imagine how many bikes have been ridden!)

If you know let me know!

The riders or teams often sell them off. That's where many of my bikes and parts come from.

Armstrong's first Tour de France bike was given to Bill Clinton. It's now on display in his presidential library.

They get melted down in a huge blast furnace, and get repurposed as water bottle cages.

I bet he didn't want it back as he'd secreted a stash of drugs down the seat tube. Alledgedly.

Finding drugs in the bike only increases the profit margin of the flip

If I remember theres a choice when working out a contract of what happens to the bicycle, maybe they take a slight pay cut if they get to keep their own machines at the end of the season and they can do with them whatever they wish. A lot of them end up being sold it seems, there are a few forum members here riding ex pro bicycles, someone has Steve Bauers merckx on the c&v forum. I have a buddy who has a old Svein Tuft TT bike - apparently he refused to use it cause it was a pos (norco).

At the end of 2008, Toyota-United closed up shop and sold off everything. Their website had the bikes, tools, team kits, water bottles, etc.

The sale is done but, for now, the website is still open.
