C&V on a morning stroll

Took a morning walk around dowtown Boston - you guys have an unbelievable amount of C&V bikes around here. Saw a lot of Univega and Nishiki and even a Miyata 912. Living in a small town and not seeing a lot of C&V I was having more fun looking at the bikes than the historical sites.

Bikes: I used to have many. And I Will again.

You should see the amount of bike traffic when school's in session. Boston and Cambridge is full of bikers. I miss the bike culture of Boston.

You should see all the stuff rotting and rusting attached to light poles all around NYC. I see so many old Peugeots and Raleighs and Univegas in that condition, I could weep.

One of my best friends is a C & V'r and a professional photographer who visits NYC several times a year to see his daughter and he's got an ongoing project taking pictures of all the stuff you mention; I keep trying to get him to share, but he keeps saying 'wait till the opening....'

I saw a bike the other day chained to an iron railing, and ivy had overgrown the railing and the bike. It was pretty cool looking, even if I did feel bad for the bike. Tell him to take a stroll around Fort Greene, Brooklyn. I see stuff like this there all the time.

I would estimate that between 20 and 30 percent of all the cool C&V stuff in Boston is in Neal Lerner's basement.

I just wrote to the Boston Tourist bureau asking about guided tours of Neal's basement.

Hey, I gave a tour of my basement today to BF-er Brianinc-ville, who was up visiting from NC. Then, we did a ride through Allston/Brighton, along the Charles River path to downtown Boston, had lunch in the North End, and then back home through the Fens. Sorry we missed you, scozim!

I saw the same thing in NYC, in Brooklyn especially. I was there in March and it was tragic all the C&V rusting to signposts. So many bikes that so many people would love.

What gets me the most about it is that bikes are SO DAMN EXPENSIVE here! I see dollar signs floating away when I see an old Raleigh (or whatever) just sitting there rusting. I know with a $50 investment, I could sell that thing for $200. It's enough to make a guy want to "rescue" the things with some bolt cutters... (not really, I'd never do that).
