Hey all,

I've been looking for a classic MTB to pick up, and I've found one listed on CL. The owner claims it to be an 81/82 StumpJumper, however I'm having difficulty confirming the date based on the bike's components. I've attached the photos emailed to me by the seller.

I emailed him with an offer of $80 (He's not sure what's it's worth so he's accepting 'bids' which he won't share with me, however he says that others have bid 'much higher' than $80).

Something's up, because he's taken down the original post and re-posted it yesterday. Not sure if he's trying to bump his ad or what.

I'm using https://mombat.org/Specialized_Specs.htm to try and confirm which model year it is based on the components. The rear DR looks like it reads "XC SPORT", and the front DR is a Suntour AR. Based on the site that I mentioned, I can't find any model with those components.

Any idea how much this bike should be worth, or can anyone help me date it? I have additional pictures if needed.

That looks to be an earlly style fork so he could be right about the year. Mountain bike collectors like these earlly stumpjumpers and pay a lot more than $80.00 for them.

Does it fit you? It's pretty big. Where's it located? That'll provide a more accurate valuation as well.

As far as it fitting me, I'm not terribly concerned... I'm really trying to find an older MTB that I can use to learn wrenching/restoring.

To be honest, that crankset is not original. Also, by itself, it is worth close to $80. I'd offer $150, sell the crankset and replace it with something proper.

I really like the basic steel frames of older MTB models, which is why I'm trying to hunt one down for < $100 (If that's possible ;P).

You sure about that? The link to the specs below shows the 1982 with TA cranks.

OP - hang in there. There are lots of nice vintage mtb's out there (granted more tig welded than lugged) for a good price, although they may be ticking upward as the road bikes become more scarce. I like my 1988 Stumpy a lot btw; it makes a great commuter.

Wow. Didn't bother looking at the link earlier. That blows my mind. I would have never thought a Stumpjumper would come with French TA cranks and Mafac cantis. Twilight Zone material, right there.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm going to be patient and wait to see what I can find. There's a good looking Diamondback Sorrento from the mid 90's up for sale for $100 nearby. May go check that out tomorrow if it hasn't sold already.

Both my 81 and 82 came with TA cranks and they sure are original to the bikes

Those stumpy's went to a dark lonely place a long time ago. I haven't seen them in years. Klunker's? I got nothing but 1 old frame now, someday I'll get to it, someday........

Mine had a factory TA crank the day I bought it: July 23rd, 1982.

It still does.
