During a recent trip to a co-op last week I picked up a pair of Shimano HC-110 high flange hubs:

I like high flange hubs and never pass up the opportunity to have them on hand. Normally I'm a fan of Sunshine hubs...especially the Pro-Am models. Even the lower end Sunshine stuff is quite nice when clean, packed with good grease, and properly adjusted.

After doing my normal break down, rehab, clean, polish, repack, etc. on this Shimano pair I was more than pleasantly surprised at how smooth these guys were. These are very garden variety...not DA-level or anything and they really remind me of the smooth, solid spin of the Sunshine Pro-Ams.

This evening, I just finished a Shimano 333 rear high flange hub I picked up yesterday. I got the single because I know of another place that has the matching front, which I will go get tomorrow. Again, I'm really surprised at how solid and smooth this hub is compared to some of the better hubs I'm used to.

Does anyone else make the same observation about older Shimano hubs?

No idea about the hubs. They look awesome, as I too love high flange hubs. I just wanted to say you make me sad every time you mention all this cool stuff you get for such great deals at the co-op. Can't you just start saying you scoured ebay for days, finally finding what you were looking for, but having to pay unbelievably high prices for it? I've searched, asked around, everything, and there seems to be Nothing in Madison for vintage bikes.

I do know the two pair of Sunshine's I've felt were nice for having not even been clean and repacked. Thanks for the heads-up on the Shimano hubs seeming to be nice too. I'll keep my eyes open for them.

I've had really good luck through the years with Shimano hubs. Most are
as smooth as the high end Campy's I have have/had. My Ultegra's and DA's
are as smooth as butter. The high flange hubs are da bomb.

Thanks for that feedback. I wondered if it was just me, the hubs, or my prowess in rebuilding them (jk ). They were a pleasant surprise.

Shhhhhhhh! There is no real market for these hubs, don't create one! I have repacked/adjusted a number of Shimano high flange hubsets (all marked "333" which I think is Dura Ace level) and all were as nice as any Campy NR hub of the same era IMHO. I tried to sell a set on ebay and got $32 for the set...better to just hold onto them.....

There not as shiny as I would have expected from you Keith.

And, just to make JohnnyBee and fender1 jealous...I picked up the other 333 hub this afternoon and just got done with it.

HC-110s on the left, 333s on the right, with their correct skewers, also from the co-op. I need to move a lever to another body, ones a bit rashed.
