Fork removal
I am having a bit of a problem removing a fork off an old frame. I have tried turning the top, but I can't budge it. Perhaps I have pansy hands.
I took pictures, the bike is upside down.
The top
And the bottom
I'm trying to unscrew the ring in the top picture. Am I wrong to attempt doing so? Or do I just need to get stronger hands? The bike is a bit old, so it's possible it's stuck rather strongly.

bump. There used to be a VAR tool for turning those round headsets. Maybe some penetrating oil? Are you going to be able to get the stem out?

looks like the stem is the first issue,
then you do need to remove the adjustable cup.
But you've got to get the stem out first.

I've removed the top bolt, that should have allowed the stem to come out, but it won't budge.

I have the same BCA Tange#5 frame sitting here and there is nothing special about the head set. As others stated you need to get the stem out first if you just unscrewed the bolt try putting it back in a few turns and tap it down with a hammer to release the wedge ( helps to spray some CRC or PB blaster down the stem first) then try to unscrew the adjustable cup ( I sometimes use a rag and a pair of Channel locks if I don't have the proper tools ).

Thanks, I actually managed to get it to let go with some penetrating oil and a sledge hammer.

I remember the first stuck steering stem I encountered in my vintage road bicycle career...
The bike was a low end Sekine SHC or something close to it, as I recall. The stem was good and stuck so I decided to straddle the front wheel, facing the handlebars, and then use the handlebars for leverage as I twisted them back and forth. The sweat started to pour.
Finally, I decided a break was in order, and I collapsed on the front steps on my house. While sitting there , gulping air, I noticed that front wheel looked cockeyed?
Yup, twisted the crop out of the fork and de-trued the front wheel, all in one fell stup (id). I felt like an idiot. Wish I had though to get out the sledge hammer:-(

Oh my! I'm glad I don't have a wheel for it at the moment, I may have attempted the same.
