My community alternative transportation event went very well today. Many bikes were fixed and even more people were pumped up for summer. Truly awesome to give back like that. Spent the day riding tandems and a tall bike I made a while back.

Yours truly:

Oh yeah, ha. Sorry.

It's a vacuum chamber for a pulse plasma experiment in the lab I work in. Should be sealed up tight enough to achieve pressures of 10^10 torr (for reference: a torr is 1/760th of an atmosphere). The seals are those copper rings in the picture with the quarter, the covers are torqued so the knife edge deforms the copper and creates a seal. The chamber is a salvaged unit (with ports upon ports with some extra ports thrown in for good measure), but the hardware and the covers (the large covers are about $200 a pop) are all brand spanking new.

I believe the thinking is that inside the vacuum, a plasma will be submitted to an electromagnetic field with the hopes that the field creates a point of compression and, ideally, thermonuclear fusion

Or, it's a time machine. Who knows- I'm just paid to turn wrenches.

SCIENCE!

It is a time machine...

I work at a major Fusion lab on the west coast (like you, on the periphery except I work with paper not metal) and the physicists here keep pushing the date for realistic fusion reactors 20-30 years into the future. And it's been that way since the inception ('55) here.

The complexity of the reaction and the means to control it for even a few seconds is immense, I see the math and science all the time and understand bupkis other than the sheer enormity of the effort.

Nice artsy/fartsy pics BTW.

Nice Beemer, Bimmer or whatever you car guys call them. E30 convertibles were always my favorite BMW, followed closely by the 2002's.

Now get it out of the fire lane.

the fire lane was just for pics. I moved it over to a handicapped spot right after the photo was taken.

Much improved indeed! Now just get some decent bumpers on that thing and you're all set.

ah yes, the euro bumper mod. That's on my list to look into but I've got some maintenance things to sort out first :)

Wait, you let her work? How is she supposed to clean the house and have dinner on the table when you get home if she is at work?

The view over Wanchai, from the pantry at my office.
Lots of construction cranes. The economy is ticking along nicely!
