Running alongside is futile and worse. You can't keep up if she's going fast enough to balance. Tell her to go, and watch. Don't let her think you can save her if she falls. Sometimes I teach "practice falling" on the grass. Stand up without a bike, and fall down deliberately. This can help to shake the fear of falling. Raising the training wheels doesn't help at all. Steering and balancing and leaning go together, and training wheels prevent leaning. Elbow and knee pads are there more to make her feel safe than to prevent injuries, though they don't hurt, unless they impede motion. If she's scared, you could give her pads. If she's gung ho, encourage her to charge forth first and worry about injuries later. Start with a slight slope to help her get some speed. Maybe there's a street or parking lot or grassy area with a slope. Go downhill. The basic technique: Lower the saddle so she can put two feet on the ground flat. Remove the pedals. Hobby-horse along, pushing forward with feet on the ground. Pedaling comes later, after the balancing and turning is good. Demonstrate this for her, riding her bike or yours. Yes, her bike is tiny, but I can do it. Maybe you can, too. Ride in a zigzag pattern to show her the turning and leaning thing. Scream with glee to show her the attitude. ;) |

For what is worth, my youngest, 3 at that time, was determined to learn to ride without training wheels but was really struggling. After several failed attempts I got the idea to remover her pedals. She sat on the seat with her feet flat on the ground and facing downhill. I had her lift her feet just enough that she could roll forward. that's encouraging, I will definitely have to spend saturday or sunday afternoon trying the DIY balance bike thing with her. Just finished building this. I think it's ride ready. I'll make some changes to make it race ready. I'll be trying track racing for the first time this spring.

The guy who sold me the frame set told me it's a Leader frame and a Leader fork. I don't necessarily believe him, but whatever. He said the color on the fork is the closest match he could get. Doofus.
Yes, it's fixed, as I plan to race it. I have a thread on it in the track racing section. There is a track in NYC (Queens) called Kissena. There's also Trexlertown, about a 90 minute drive from here. Having two this close is nice. |

Her whole life has been heavily bike influenced. I've gotten started on a 700c road bike with brifters and a 700c singlespeed, she wants to join my wife and I on our road rides and she is all about having her own singlespped "Like the big kids ride" around our neighborhood. Like I said, I know I'm blessed! My long time riding buddy is sideways about his son, the boy has no interest in bikes. I mean none, zip, totally zero interest in riding with his pop. It goes without saying but my friend is really bummed since that was something he'd planned on sharing together. There is a bright spot, last weekend my daughter was able to talk his son into going with us. She told him that he could ride the Parkpre... then she challenged him to a race... not wanting to get beat by a younger girl, he accepted and we had a good time. I'm optimistic that he'll want to ride again if there is a challenge involved. In the car on the way home my daughter told me that she let him win so he'd be happy but next time she plans on "spankin' his butt!" I'll have my camera ready for that one!!! |
neopop, that's outstanding. I have two daughters, age 25 and 22. Both love bikes and the "idea" of riding but still haven't done much of it. I haven't managed to get them to love it for real. My 25 year old recently got herself a slightly use Cannondale Synapse, which is great. Will she ride it? She's in San Francisco, so I can't ride with her. :( My 22 year old visited last night and saw my track bike. She admired it, saying it was effed up. That's young people speak for outstanding, so she appreciated it.
