You should see it in person, it is VERY large. It's probably as big as a normal calculator. To give the photo some scale, that pickup inside the ring fits onto the front axle.

The best part, it has a bar that grows as your speed increases.... I think it goes up to 60mph or something absurd like that.

I just purchased a bike with kind of the same system.
Before I remove it I gladly share the set up with you guys

The same as the cateye it also has the growing bar starting from the bottom left corner apparently imitating a little speed clock as well as the speed and trip distance in units ( no decimals )

The bike had been standing in a shed for 30 years and I was surprised to notice the computer was still working and that the former owner had only driven 2209 km with it

On the way home I got asked why I had a disc-brake on my old Racing Bike

Wow! There appears to be an image of the earliest "digital" computer on p. 124!

At least, I hope that's what it is.

I have a Avocet 20, but it is without the transmitter ring that goes onto the wheel. Will it work ok with a generic bike computer magnet on a spoke, or do I really need that ring?

How about a pink Avocet 31 or a large size 2" x 2 1/2" Performance

Don't know if either works

For some reason the magnetic ring for the Avocets do not come up for sale too often out there, new or used. unlike Cateye parts. I've been looking for one too so I can use the computer on my other wheelsets, but haven't found one for the two years I have been watching out for it.

I might have one .... can't remember if it's Avocet. PM me to remind me to look.

I have a NIB Cannondale computer in the basement somewhere.

Hmm, I need something to track the mileage on my Armstrong. How reliable/accurate are those old mechanical odometers? Are they hard to come by?

Thanks,

I haven't been able to find any batteries to make my Avocets work right!

LOTS of patina on this one, from a '68 Schwinn Speedster (as found). Not sure if it works or if I'll be able to salvage it.

Yeah, the bars & stem are probably toast (and the speedometer, too), but the rest of the bike is really not in bad shape. What you see on the frame/fenders is 98% dirt.

Now back to computers...

The Avocets were really good, because the magnetic ring created an analog signal which the computer then converted to digital. The designer claimed it was more accurate this way.

I still have a Huret Multito, a mechanical odometer with a belt drive. No ticking. Very nice.

I still have my Lucas Cyclometer very similar to this and still have the original box it came in. I actually recently resurrected it to mount on a 3 speed but have since replaced it with a Huret and the rubber ring. The Lucas inherent problem is that it maxes out at about 15 mph and the pin no longer meshes well with the little sprocket. Cool thread - I love this old stuff.

Is there any way to tell what size wheel a cyclometer is supposed to work on? I have a couple, but I don't know if they are for 27" or 26" wheels. I'm not too crazy about them, I find the constant "tick, tick, tick..." annoying. That is why Huret brought out the belt drive odo. I think they also had different pulleys for different wheel sizes.

GHM: I love that stopwatch mount.

The one I have (pictured above) could be taken apart if one was careful. Inside there was a planetary gear of some sort with a different ratio on each side. You could turn it over to get the other wheel size. You'll have to to some countin' and calculatin' to figure out which side goes for which wheel, but the idea is that the smaller wheel needs to make the digits move less for each wheel revolution. I recall seeing this in the literature that came with it, but my memory stops there. I can only suppose that the size options were for 26" and 27"/700c wheels.

Mine didn't go tink tink tink when it was new. It got stiff with age and thus noisy, which is why I finally pulled it off the bike.
