Wheel sizes "my friend" would like to know.....
What is 27 1 1/4 versus 700c? I told my "friend" that 27 was mainly for touring, and city streets, while 700c were more for racing! He didn't buy that! :-) Can someone share what these numbers represent? Thanks!

700c is 622 mm bead seat diameter, 27 inch is 630 mm. Tires are not interchangable, but you can swap wheels on a bike if there is 4 mm of adjustment in the brake shoes. 27 inch wheels were the mostly American standard for lightweight "racing ten speeds" in the 1970s and 1980s. 700c was the Euopean size used for tubular racing tires. By using 700c clinchers, racers could swap between their racing wheels and their training wheels without changing the brake adjustment. In the late 1980s, most road bikes were using 700c in various widths to accomodate everything from racing to hybrids. In the last few years, 29er mountain bikes gained popularity, which are just 700c wheels with tires that are extra wide and knobby.
Tire/wheel sizes seem to confuse a lot of people. I just bought a pair of 700c wheels and tubes at a garage sale for $20 because someone couldn't get 26x1 3/8 tires to fit. I don't know what hapened to the rest of the bike.
