Should have held onto this one.

At the moment, I can't think of anything I regret selling or giving away. I regret a few bikes that were stolen from me, including TWO PX-10's.

Oh yes, I regret selling my 1975 Raleigh Gran Sport in order to buy my first PX-10 in 1979. I was 18, and it didn't occur to me to have two bikes: a nice one for fun rides and a commuter bike that isn't theft bait.

I'm regretting getting a full knee replacement on Oct 19th .. Ahhh the joy.

It has really messed up my ride quality.

Johnnybee.

Selling my 531 Knight (Wolverhampton) thirty years ago! I must have been insane. These days I can't even find a pic of one to put up on the thread. Mostly Campy Record. I hope my recently acquired Woodrup (Leeds) frame (build not started yet) will bring back the magic. I'm not like 20grit; I collect regrets like greying/whitening hair.

Lenton58 09-14-11 07:13 AM

Regret#-2: About three years ago, my wife and I were doing a big clean-out. In the shed were bits of bicycle and nearly all the stuff that was to become my Vitus. Stuff was hauled out and sorted into piles. One huge pile was going to the recycling center. (We don't have 'dumps' or landfills in Japan.)

Somehow ... SIGH! ... a Brooks B-17 ended up in the wrong pile.:twitchy::eek::(:o

I have 2 major regrets.

1958 Norman built Western Flyer. It was nicer that any other three speed that I have seen in person.

I should have sold my Raleigh Pro and kept this Mike Melton frame... I REALLY regret selling this! It did go to another forum member so that does ease the pain a bit. I may never find another in my size so easily ever again.

I threw out a full campy super record groupo by mistake. Does that count?
R-U kidding? My condolences. You must sometimes sit bolt upright in a cold sweat from a deep sleep at 3:30 a.m. You must need a mild sedative and trauma counseling. At least I would. — Lorne

Fair enough. I guess my regret is making a snarky comment about an elder. I do hope a saddle like that isn't in my future, though.

Rocket-Sauce 09-14-11 08:15 AM

Regrets? Mostly wishing I still had some of my old bikes...

I sold a MB-0 mtb to a kid I coached for $100. It was in very well-used shape, not much was left original, and he needed a bike. He still has it.

There are lots of bikes I wish I pulled the trigger on and bought even though I didn't have space, $$, etc. The one I remember most was a Colnago Bi-titan with Chorus. The guy wanted $400 for it and it was in my size. But I didn't like the color (blue)....

Haha, no worries, I hope we are all riding at that age, cheesy saddle or not.

I am now making a box for my nicer bike parts, that will be marked; "Good stuff's, Do Not throw away" on all sides.

I have a system like that. I keep nice bits like my gold MAFACs or the two campy gruppo's waiting for a frame in wooden boxes of the kind they present expensive wine in. Shimano/Simplex/Huret/city bike stuff goes in shoe boxes.

Sweet 520! :) Treks have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for some strange reason.

Mercian Rider 09-14-11 10:05 AM

Sorry, no photos (sold them before photography was invented ;)), but here are the ones I wish I still had:

Early 70s Windsor Pro
'71 Raleigh International
70s Paramount P-15
Centurian Ironman
2 Trek 520s
70s Schwinn Heavy Duty
70s Schwinn Collegiate

due ruote 09-14-11 10:34 AM

Nice 520. Are those bags Swiss, from a surplus outlet? I remember seeing some like that a while back. I think now I regret not buying them.

A few weeks ago, I replied to a CL ad for a $500 Cinelli Super Corsa with Campy parts. The ad had already been up for almost an hour (like an eternity in the bay area), so I didn't have much hope. Never got a reply...then yesterday, I noticed that I did in fact get a reply that somehow was misdirected to my spam folder. I was first in line and never knew it! Now it's gone, gone, gone...

lotek 09-14-11 01:57 PM

I regret letting Barbara Ellen ****** slip away. . .
wait, we're not talking about that? oh.

I regret selling my Serotta even though it was too small for me
what the heck am I supposed to do with those Serotta jerseys?

I can help ease your pain:

You'll still have to find the parts to finish it, but we all need to start somewhere!

That's correct; they are the swiss ammo bags. I purchased Ortlieb's attachment system for them, and they looked and worked really slick. I made two or three hundred bucks selling the 520, but that just means I doomed myself to never being able to afford one again.

Regrets - all a LOOOOooooNG time ago now, so I can remember without too much sedation. giving a 1948 Claud Butler Tour Anglais frame to a school friend because it was too big for me - I grew about three inches taller during the next 3 months.

At the wise old age of eighteen, clearing out all my Claud Butlers, my Youngs hand built racing frame, with full Campagnolo group, three sets of racing wheels (Record large flange hubs, straight skewers, Super Competition sprint rims and D'Allessando silk tubs-trading the whole lot in for £45 towards the cost of the supercharged MG Midget that I bought as a project that took over the garage space.

Then buying and riding motorbikes, crashing one and ending up in hospital and having to sell the MG to pay the costs. Never did get to drive it myself. Lessons in life. No photos still exist of any of these.

My Holdsworth Mistral now fills the gap left by the Youngs, but I'm still seeking a reasonably priced Claud Butler tour Anglais - although I do now have a lovely 1935 Claud Butler Super Velo....

So, with these two as consolation, "Je ne regret rien" (apologies to Mme Piaf for my execrable french!

I regret that the fellow with the handbuilt Ritchey Team Comp I saw yesterday is not interested in selling it to me even if it is a little small for him and just about right for me.

Maybe I cold entice him with a custom frame replacement...

I regret selling almost every bike I have sold but I can only keep so many. I especially wish I could have kept these:

A homeless man at copake asked me "how much for the orange bike?"
I chuckled to myself and said $2000... He asked why it was so expensive and wondered if it would ride at all like his bike, they were after all both orange. I humored him for a while explaining why it didn't have any brakes, that with a fixed gear you control speed with the pedals... he compared it to his coaster brake bike from his childhood.

"OK then, I'll take it" he says after a few moments pause..... Wait, what? The next few bits of details become fuzzy as I only vaguely remember his spoutings about how he couldnt figure out how he was going to get it home.... but oh so clearly do i remember looking down at my hand holding a pile of hundred dollar bills, neatly stapled in sets of 3, dumbfounded, asking myself "What the hell did I just do? what the F** just happened?" as he ziptied my Paramount to this milkcrate and rode away.
