show us your Belgian bikes

Here is the 1974? Flandria donated to the Bike exchange. Mostly first Gen Dura Ace. We sold it last weekend to a very appreciative gentleman as a gift for an old friend.

My MX Leader has been posted in other threads but not here before so I get another chance to show off my bike.

I’ve never seen another one painted like it before.

Wow! What a story! Thanks for sharing. This is the essence of this forum: members helping eachother. Yes, it must have been quite some time ago that the shop was there. It was in the fifties and sixties, at least. So, the bike I got must be quite old, at least the frame. The rest is a mystery. I really start to wonder who rode the bike, as several people now have mentioned that the Wargee shop was know as very good. The bikes seem to have been made by hand... And then the question: how many did actually survive all this time? I've never seen one before. Not one. Well, as Sherlock Holmes used to say: "Interesting, my dear Watson!"

As it is now

Have a look on https://www.google.be/maps/@50.82309...8i6656!6m1!1e1 to see how it was just before the cement.
As you'll see, the house shop was already altered

Thanks for the picture. Is it safe to assume then that the Liberty bike/frame is at least 45 years old, when the shop closed around 1970?

One more piece of the jigsaw... Mr. Wargee was born in Tervuren on 24.05.1920 and died there on 04.03.1982. He was an independant Belgian coureur, according to this site: Vital WARGEE données personnelles

One of the mechanics as my lbs has one like that, or very close. I've only seen it once, a couple years ago.

Big thanks @Munny for your researches (and the translation!)!

Much enjoyed and appreciated here.

Lucas, you could have saved us a good deal of if you had posted that brake bridge photo earlier with the fender mount stud.

At least now me know we are looking at the result of a reworking...

You're not going to believe this! Today I again studied the rear brake and it's a Weinmann 500. It's stamped on the back too, although I couldn't trace brakes with a red 'label' in the centre AND quick releases. Interesting, my dear Watson. But the real surprise was this: the washer (small metal ring) you see under the bridge to keep the nut in place isn't a washer, but an actual, old Belgian COIN! Was it a lucky charm? You tell me... I'll post a pic soon.

Thanks Munny!

Did not intend to suggest the fender mount stud represented a reworking. Only that it showed frame to be earlier than we had originally suspected. "Reworking" is paint and likely some of the braze-ons.

Thank you again for your very excellent information.

Still working on the Liberty. Put new shoes on the lady (Vittoria rally tubes, took me 3 days to glue...). Cleaned the handlebar (new tape coming in tomorrow), tried out the new Weinmanns (hope about periode correct: '70, but I simply like them). Cleaned the seatpost (27.2), greased it and put it in again, after cleaning the whole saddle bling-bling. On the ring, keeping the saddle in place on the seatpost it says: "Ideale, made in France". Finally! The French speak English Well, you get an idea. Pics taken in the evening. Gives a bit of a frozen-in-time feeling

Those are 160-series levers, by the looks of it. The models with a quick release. Nice. Did they come with cable adjusters as well?

As far as I know it's these: VeloBase.com - Component: Weinmann AG (drilled levers) with a small 'cable guidance thing' on top. I like them too. Put new cables in today. Step by step... (and lots of polishing)

In your pictures it looks like it has a QR, and with just the small cable stop it would be a 161. # 4 in the catalog page below. The one you linked to on Velobase is a 144, # 3 on the page below.

Finally took the lady out for a spin. The weather was fine, the Liberty ready and the road whispering to me. This bike is such a delight! She rides (glides!) very smooth and lightly, the steering is direct and it feels like she weighs nothing. Or was it the wind in my back? She is a beauty and it's love, I guess.
