Help ID Campy Drops on a vintage Colnago?
I am on a quest to date a Colnago Super that I am currently building. Most feedback has pointed to late 70's early 80's. This weekend, a mechanic was looking at the frame and said that Campy only made the specific drops for a few years. Here are the details as best I can describe them:
On the rear drops, there are two small holes, approx 2 mm, one towards the top and one towards the bottom. Could this have been an innovation that didn't take off? Some unusual departure from the classic style? I have no idea. Campy Only has historic catalogs but I couldn't tell from the pics if there were holes in the drops.
Any input would be great. Thanks a bunch.

Rick,
Porta Catena perhaps?
See picture below. The dropout itself is hard to see but the
diagram is pretty clear as to where the holes would be (2 holes).
If so the Porta Catena debuted in 1977 and didn't last more than 2 or 3 years
(not sure exactly how long). It was an inelegant attempt (IMHO) for a chain
hanger.
thanks to Velostuff for the Porta Catena pic.

Marty,
After your input, I went back to the Campy Only site and saw that they have the Porta Catena in a 1979 catalog (Suppliment 17a). So now I think I'm down to 1977 to 1979. Excellent! I appreciate the help.

It's a Campy 1010B Dropout They still continued with the holes at least up until the time I left the bike biz in 1993. It always seemed crazy to me to do this when the Porta Catena idea was introduced in 1977 and never caught on.

Aaaagggghhhhhh! Back to square one. Ok, at least now I know the frame is no older than 1977. Thanks for the input and photo.
Rick

After looking closely at the supplied photos I decided to check my Colnago Super. The drop-outs on my frame do not have these mystery holes but I'll be darned if there isn't a little raised pad cast into the drop-out right where each hole should be. I don't know if these were an attempt to cover up the hole after the idea was dropped or if it dates prior to the 1977 date you were given. The only reason I figured I'd speak up is because I believe my Super is from the late '70's also. I have owned the frame since 1981 and was rather used when I bought it. It had a repaint by Cyclart well before I came into the picture so all of the original "markers" as to its actual age are long gone. I've just begun trying to research the frame's past so I'm sure Ill be posting many questions in the near future. Later.............Matt
