Actual Shimano Frame?

We all snicker when we see Craigslist adds for Shimano and Campagnolo frames...but this one seems really interesting to me. I wonder who made it? I'm guessing Panasonic:

Didn't ebay start charging fees on shipping to eliminate these types of ads?

pinch1967 10-20-11 09:02 AM

almost 2000.00$ in shipping cost **********???

They charge a final value fee on shipping, yes.

SteveSGP 10-20-11 09:04 AM

Hmm, only $2000.00 shipping?

Seems like a bargain :innocent:

Unless you consider the fact that I can ship a 400lb pallet of engine parts to Australia for about half that.

I thought that was the case...so there's really no advantage to the seller for this type of sale.

Zaphod Beeblebrox 10-20-11 09:14 AM

2 grand is really not all that surprising for a full NOS Dura-Ace AX group and a NOS frame of unknown manufactuer that at least looks pretty nicely put together.

Italuminium 10-20-11 09:22 AM

there are one or two bikes around town here that have shimano decals on the st and dt (they appear to be under the clear coat - yes I checked. I'm obsessed :) ), but with 105 on the male bike and positron on the mixte. BTW, I don't think the price is outrageous, NOS ax is very expensive. Rightly so, it's awesome.

ecnewell 10-20-11 09:27 AM

Pretty. I guess it's just the perspective of the photo, but that bottle looks absolutely huge.

Would this have been a show bike for use in Shimano's display booths at trade shows, or was this actually available for purchase at some time?

KonAaron Snake 10-20-11 09:27 AM

I'm not criticizing the price, I just don't understand why he put it in the shipping. Ebay took away the motivation to do that.

That was my thought too...maybe a display for AX.

Email him about a local pickup, and take a little vacation!

horus11B 10-20-11 09:46 AM

what part of south east asia is he in? I'm in korea right now, i'll stop by there on my way to the states and pick it up for someone if nessicary. cover my expenses and we'll call it even.

jeirvine 10-20-11 09:47 AM

I bought a white, Shinmano branded frame bike on CL locally a few months back. Seemed legit, and ca 1980 or so. There were no other makers marks on it.

horus11B 10-20-11 09:49 AM

crap... nevermind.... a night in tailand for an army soldier? You guys would be better off paying the 2k in shipping.

mikeybikes 10-20-11 09:51 AM

From the listing:

Estimate transit time, this item will be shipped from “South East Asia” within 2 business days of receiving your complete payment and clear information
I wonder how much it would cost to fly down to SE Asia and bring it back with you on the airplane...

KonAaron Snake 10-20-11 09:55 AM

He's not really charging 2 grand in shipping - it's part of the item's price. People used to do that because ebay fees weren't calculated on shipping, but they are now - so I don't get what point this serves.

gridplan 10-20-11 09:59 AM

There are Shimano bikes out there. I've had this aero bike bookmarked for several years: [Click!]

KonAaron Snake 10-20-11 10:04 AM

I'd wager they're re-badged Tsunoda or Panasonic.

At least the seller has 100% positive feedback...

...on ONE transaction!

Old Fat Guy 10-20-11 11:18 AM

My best recollection is that Shimano contracted builders for show bikes to hang their Dura Ace AX group off of. None were really 'Shimano' built. I don't believe either example shown are Panasonic, at least they don't resemble the Panasonic AR6000.

Yes. Even Trek built one (actually, Tim Isaac built it). AFAIK, Shimano still has it in the museum in Japan.

KonAaron Snake 10-20-11 12:08 PM

It would be interesting to know who made it...the bike on ebay looks a lot like a Team Panasonic I had and the aero one looks like the Lotus/Tsunoda frames that sometimes come up for sale. I read somewhere that Nagasawa built some Shimano branded bikes as well.

Old Fat Guy 10-20-11 12:23 PM

The eBay bike has the oval seat tube, like the AR6000, but not much else in common. There were a few others back then, one branded Araya, as I recall.

That looks like one of the lugless Lotus Aero models, come to think of it.

^Lotus, that's the one I couldn't think of. I'd rather have an AR6000
