Drillium dos and DO NOTS!!!

A few year ago this old Stronglight crank set showed up attached to a Peugeot PX10. Needless to say, I opted to not use the crank when I restored the Peugeot. That said, I though it might be nice to share this piece or art with the rest of you.

Enjoy - or not...

Cool looking crank although all the little drill holes seem kinda pointless and look like they could hurt the strength integrety of the crank.

GrayJay 10-27-11 11:58 AM

Looks like the crank contracted measles.

Somebody got a drillpress for their birthday !

The look of it doesn't fit my tastes, but to my untrained eye it looks pretty well done. The hole placement looks planned out, everything is well-centered and symmetrical. Not as good as DD's, but better than a lot of what we see! What are your plans for it, Randy?

Harlan 10-27-11 12:59 PM

Better than drilled rims!

Chombi 10-27-11 01:14 PM

Heck!, a trip to Radioshack for a bunch of LEDs to put into those holes and a small battery pack to zip tie on to the crank arm.........and your will be the envy of all night riders!:p
Imagine all the colors........

The bores adjacent to the pedal eye are the most problematic. Do note that the left and the right differ just above the pedal eye.
Not my choice of attempted weight reduction.
There was a Model of Ital-Vega that had drilled crank arms, we thought those were scary too.
A guy I raced against long ago, cut 1/4" wide slots in his Sugino crank arms, two slots about 30 mm long with a web between of about 20 mm long. At one race I saw him at the start line but not during the race, when he started off he broke an crank arm. Ouch.

Maybe DrillumDude can do something nice to it.

Ex Pres 10-27-11 01:52 PM

Add a little countersinking and I'd be ready to ride.

My thought exactly.

Drillium don'ts - British dentistry?

dgodave 10-27-11 02:10 PM

All those holes. Just fill them back in.
.

SumoMuffin 10-27-11 02:24 PM

That's really neat. I wonder how much weight it actually removed. Either way it looks cool!

rootboy 10-27-11 02:28 PM

Now they how many holes it takes to make Albert fall.

Old Fat Guy 10-27-11 02:44 PM

Canadians spell funny. Hope this helps.

realestvin7 10-27-11 02:48 PM

It didn't break for the ol' boy that used to ride it. ;)

I've got a Schwinn Paramount frameset coming my way, and I don't have a crank for it yet...

DO - Create something unique, beautiful, and USABLE!

DO NOT - Drill holes at random hoping to save weight, resulting in something ugly, unsafe/unusable, and probably not weighing much less than when you started!

IMHO it's ALL about aesthetics and has almost nothing to do with weight savings.

Being machinist I pretty much drill holes in things for a living. Bicycle parts is a medium I haven't played with much (yet), but I've always loved the look of well crafted, well thought out and artistic drillium work. I'v got a'73 NR rear derailleur sitting in my tool box just begging to be put under the mill spindle...

AngelGendy 10-27-11 03:49 PM

I drill holes in my water bottles to save weight.
