Drillium dos and DO NOTS!!!
6 Attachment(s)
A few year ago this old Stronglight crank set showed up attached to a Peugeot PX10. Needless to say, I opted to not use the crank when I restored the Peugeot. That said, I though it might be nice to share this piece or art with the rest of you.
Enjoy - or not... http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224711 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224712 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224713 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224716 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224715 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=224717 |
Cool looking crank although all the little drill holes seem kinda pointless and look like they could hurt the strength integrety of the crank.

Looks like the crank contracted measles.

Somebody got a drillpress for their birthday !
|
The look of it doesn't fit my tastes, but to my untrained eye it looks pretty well done. The hole placement looks planned out, everything is well-centered and symmetrical. Not as good as DD's, but better than a lot of what we see! What are your plans for it, Randy?
|
Better than drilled rims!
|
Heck!, a trip to Radioshack for a bunch of LEDs to put into those holes and a small battery pack to zip tie on to the crank arm.........and your will be the envy of all night riders!:p
Imagine all the colors........ Chombi |

Not my choice of attempted weight reduction. There was a Model of Ital-Vega that had drilled crank arms, we thought those were scary too. A guy I raced against long ago, cut 1/4" wide slots in his Sugino crank arms, two slots about 30 mm long with a web between of about 20 mm long. At one race I saw him at the start line but not during the race, when he started off he broke an crank arm. Ouch. |
Maybe DrillumDude can do something nice to it.
|
Add a little countersinking and I'd be ready to ride.

Drillium don'ts - British dentistry?
|
All those holes. Just fill them back in.
. |
That's really neat. I wonder how much weight it actually removed. Either way it looks cool!
|
Now they how many holes it takes to make Albert fall.
|
Canadians spell funny. Hope this helps.
|
It didn't break for the ol' boy that used to ride it. ;)
|
I love it.

DO - Create something unique, beautiful, and USABLE!
DO NOT - Drill holes at random hoping to save weight, resulting in something ugly, unsafe/unusable, and probably not weighing much less than when you started! IMHO it's ALL about aesthetics and has almost nothing to do with weight savings. Being machinist I pretty much drill holes in things for a living. Bicycle parts is a medium I haven't played with much (yet), but I've always loved the look of well crafted, well thought out and artistic drillium work. I'v got a'73 NR rear derailleur sitting in my tool box just begging to be put under the mill spindle... |
I drill holes in my water bottles to save weight.
