The problem with n+1 bikes...

I recently finished up a build that turned into a really fun ride, an old Schwinn LeTour - 1x7 with upright bars, like I said, it is a fun little cruiser. So I had it up in LA over Thanksgiving and picked up a flat on the front tire. I've been meaning to fix it but with the holiday demands and another build I am working on for my neice free time has been at a premium and I have been switching between two other bikes to ride when I have the chance to get away. It's a Vittoria Randonner tire, a real pita to get on and off, probably the reason I haven't gotten to it.

Anyways, that is all, no rant, no general advice or serious questions, just rambling on, maybe I should just go fix the flat now, yea that's an idea.

No pics since I left my camera at the MIL's house over Thanksgiving. So this may or may not have happened...

problem with n+1?

seems like many bikes saved you having to fix a punture as you had many spare bikes to roll on.

The problem with n+1 for me, is that one bike breaks, and I put it aside because I have others to ride, and then the next one gets a flat or something trivial, but I don't fix it because...

I've been known to do the same thing , I may or may not have a set of wheels that I started repacking several weeks ago laying in my basement because I just swapped some others to the bike.

Kind of confused on this.

N+1 is bad because you don't want to change a tube?

Nice problem to have, ride the bike until it gets a flat, then discard it.

illwafer, i've seen a couple of the pictures you have posted here and they look strikingly similar to some bikes I saw in a condo where I went to buy some random bits on CL about a month ago on a rainy Saturday. Curious if that was you? I was the one that bought the orphan barcon, wheel with broken axle and a couple of other bits and only had 30 something dollars because my debit card was buggered and I could get any more cash at the time.

It was an allegory deriding the disposable nature of our society juxtaposed with an individual having a hoarding tendency and trying to come to grips with his laziness after consuming a few beers.

N+1 allows options not available to those who are currently at N1, but those at N1 are more apt to not procrastinate a repair.
Typing this as I look over and see a banana about three days past the edible stage, 'scuse me while I go deposit it in a trash can at least thirty feet away to confuse the fruit flies that are about to discover their lunch.

Did you ride from Cardiff By The Sea up to L.A. ? If so, you should post a scenic ride report with many pictures for those of us stuck in the frozen zones, especially those of us who at one time lived for a time near L.A. , which if I recall correctly there was ample photographic opportunities that could also include a C&V bike in the imagery.

I understand the feeling. When working on one bike I can walk by another bike and get sidetracked adjusting some brakes to the point that I forget that I'm derusting some drop bars.

^^This. That's why I cut it down to three rides instead of the seven I used to have.

I'm definitely an n+1 guy and what i find is that once i have an issue with one (could be a very minor issue like a flat fix) it seems like word gets out to my other bikes and they all start acting up - sounds crazy but its true - but today - as i type - they are all pretty well behaved (well i'm assuming - who knows what they do while i'm at work)

The problem with n + 1 is that n + 1 = n + 2

Illogical, but true.

Bahhh, for what ever reason I was thinking those brake levers were for flat bars, you want them back? The barcon is perfect for the aforementioned bike and the wheel completes a wheel set, while not a "match" it pairs well with a black-annodized front wheel I have.

Speaking of problems with n+1, I come home from work and there is another bike in my garage. A neighbor was clearing out their garage and gave it to my daughter as she was walking home from school, telling her "give this to your dad, he can fix it up."

Sorry, camera is lost so no pics at this time - only have had a cursory check up, but I believe it is a mid-level Bianchi from the mid 80's
Columbus - tretubi sticker, Modolo-Sporting brakes and levers, 3ttt stem and bars, ofmega headset, mavic module-e rims to wolber hubs? campy dt ****ers and fd with a shimano tiagra rd???, Bianchi Selle Italia saddle and san marco seat post 27.2 I think. ~58cm frame, just a little bit too big for me. It's in pretty rough shape but I think it can clean up reasonably well. Pretty sure it's all original except for the rd.

Crap, n+1,another project...
