For awhile now, he's seemed more like a mad scientist (which he nearly was), than a rock guitar icon. Pretty interesting guy, actually.

Coventry Eagle (brand)? The article doesn't state a bicycle brand name...

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” ― Ernest Hemingway

That's not Papa Hemingway. Image search points to Philander Barclay (b. September 16, 1878).

Philander Barclay, a bicycle repairman by trade, was a passionate amateur historian and photographer. He single handedly captured in images the early growth of Oak Park and River Forest from 1902 until his death in 1940. Over a thousand of his photos survive.

Thanks for this. Have heard Ray Allen talk about cycling and give it some credit for his longevity in the NBA. Never seen a photo of him cycling, though. Fun to imagine him racing Reggie Miller.

Weird. When I googled Ernest Hemingway on a bicycle, this came up. It didn't look like him so I clicked the link it and it came up Ernest... But if you search the image alone, it then comes up Philander Barklay.

This one also comes up as both Ernest Hemingway, and several other people??

And then there is this one which includes both??

Yes, he was riding a bicycle with two bare rims = no tires or tubes. Must have been fun keeping it upright.

Cheers

Lance's bike has right/rear brifter, but lever for front derailleur; Perhaps easier to trim if needed, or just weight-weenie.

I've read that Robin was a *serious* road cyclist, saying it was a substitute for drugs once sober. Pretty good performer, although based on later surgery, by that age his heart was partly clogged. Huge road bike collection, some traditional and artsy, some with latest and greatest tech. Auctioned off a few years after his death.
